Rosemont, Ill. (2/8/19) -- University of Detroit Mercy senior hurler
Ashley Mauser broke the all-time strikeout record on Friday evening. Her nine strikeouts in game one on the day propelled her into sole possession of the record with 258 career strikeouts.
It was opening day for the Titans who faced tough opponents in UMKC and Loyola-Chicago, dropping both games from the Total Control Sports Invitational on Friday night.
Sophomore
Alyssa Lang had the first hit of the season for the Titans, while
Courtney Gilbert corralled her first RBI of the season with an RBI triple in game two.
Taylor Gauthier,
Jessenia Castillo and
McKenna Tanguay produced the first collegiate hits of their careers as well.
DETROIT MERCY 0 - UMKC 9
Senior hurler
Ashley Mauser got the nod in game one, and picked up right where she left off last year, striking out three of four batters faced in the first inning.
She continued to pitch well, recording two more strikeouts in the second inning, giving her five strikeouts through two innings.
UMKC struck in the third inning, scoring three runs, one earned, giving them an early lead. They scored four more runs in the fifth inning, three unearned and one earned, extending the lead to 7-0.
Cami Sinclair came in to relieve Mauser in the fifth, recording the final out of the inning, and tossing the next two innings.
UMKC added two more runs in the top of the seventh, giving them a 9-0 lead that would hold as the final.
Mauser tossed 4.2 innings, scattering six hits, seven runs (two earned), and nine strikeouts. Sinclair went 2.1 innings scattering three hits, two runs and one strikeout.
DETROIT MERCY 1 - LOYOLA CHICAGO 3
In game two on the day, the Titans took on the Ramblers of Loyola Chicago.
Junior
Liz Murphy got the start in the circle, and tossed a solid game for the Titans.
The Ramblers jumped out to an early lead, with a two-run triple followed by an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning.
However, the Titans quickly responded with an RBI triple from senior
Courtney Gilbert in the top of the third inning.
The red, white and blue had their chances, and even stranded a runner on second base in the top of the fifth, but were unable to hack away at the deficit, with the final score ending up 3-1 in favor of Loyola.
Murphy went six innings, scattering eight hits, three earned runs and one strikeout.
