ST. LOUIS, Mo. (3/12/2019) -- Adding to his already lengthy accolades for his rookie year, University of Detroit Mercy freshman
Antoine Davis was named to the USBWA All-District V team on Tuesday.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association released its 2018-19 Men's All-District Teams, based on voting from its national membership of 900-plus. The USBWA has selected All-District Teams since the 1956-57 season, its founding year.
Davis joins a star-studded All-District squad that includes members of the Big Ten, BIG EAST and AAC. He is also the only student-athlete from the Horizon League to be named to any of the districts.
Davis ended the year leading the Horizon League in scoring at 26.1 points per game as well as ranking ninth in the HL at 3.6 assists per game. If his 26.1 ppg., holds up, he would be just the fifth Titan to lead the league in scoring and the first since Ray McCallum's 18.7 in 2012-13.Â
He totaled 784 points on the year and 132, 3-pointers, both second in school history to Rashad Phillips' 785 and 136 in 2000-01, and Davis also became the first Titan to tally 100 assists in a year since McCallum in 2012-13. During the season, he posted 23, 20-point games as well as nine 30-point games.Â
His 132, 3-pointers set a new NCAA record for a freshman, breaking the previous mark of 122 by Davidson's Stephen Curry in 2006-07, and were also the fifth most in Horizon League history.Â
He started his collegiate career on a torrid pace, recording eight-straight 20-point games, the first Titan to have eight-straight games with 20 points or more since Willie Green in 2002-03, along with five 30-point performances in his first two games and a Titan freshman record 42 in his fourth contest against Loyola Maryland. He would later up that rookie record to 48 points against Wright State, just one point off the all-time school mark, while tying a school record for the second time with 10, 3-pointers.
Davis also took down a few conference freshman records for points in a game, 3-pointers in a season and points in a season and his season-high 48 points was the fourth most in league play in Horizon League history, and the most since 1995, as well as overall the sixth most in the conference record books.Â
He is the first Titan to receive USBWA honors since Phillips in 2001.
For each of the nine geographic districts, 10 players are selected (11 in the case of ties in the voting) as well as a player and coach of the year.Â
The USBWA will release its 2018-19 Men's All-America team on Monday, March 18, along with the finalists for the Oscar Robertson Trophy (National Player of the Year), Wayman Tisdale Award (National Freshman Player of the Year) and the Henry Iba Award (National Coach of the Year).
