ST. LOUIS, Mo. (3/18/2019) -- University of Detroit Mercy star guard
Antoine Davis is in the running for another major accolade as he was tabbed a finalist for the Wayman Tisdale Award, given to the National Freshman Player of the Year.
The award is presented on behalf of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) as Davis was a USBWA All-District V selection last week.Â
Along with Davis - who is believed to be the first-ever Titan finalist for this award - the other nominees come from two of the top four seeds in the NCAA Tournament in Duke's RJ Barrett and Zion Williamson and North Carolina's Coby White.Â
The Horizon League Freshman of the Year had a record-breaking season on the court, shattering nearly every freshman record for Detroit Mercy and the Horizon League as well as one NCAA freshman mark.Â
He ended his rookie season leading the Horizon League in scoring at 26.1 points per game, third in the nation. He was also top 10 in the country in 3-pointers per game (4.40-second), total 3-pointers (132-third), field goals (263-seventh) and total points (784-seventh).Â
Davis - who was also First Team All-League -Â tallied 784 points, which was a Titan and Horizon League freshman record and just one point off the school record for points in a season.Â
He sank 132, 3-pointers on the year, eclipsing the NCAA freshman record of 122 by Stephen Curry at Davidson in 2006-07. The 132 triples were also the second most in school history and fifth most in the Horizon League record book.Â
During the season, he recorded 23, 20-point games as well as nine 30+ point outings, including a Titan and Horizon League freshman record 48 points against Wright State, the second most in school history and the sixth most in HL play. In that contest, he also tied a school mark nailing 10, 3-pointers.Â
The USBWA announced its All-America team today and will announce its major award winners in the next few weeks in:
- March 25: Henry Iba Coach of the Year AwardÂ
- March 26: Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year Award
- April 5: Oscar Robertson TrophyÂ
The USBWA has chosen a national freshman of the year award since the 1988-89 season. It was named the Wayman Tisdale Award in honor of the late three-time USBWA All-American at Oklahoma, the first freshman to receive first-team All-America honors from the USBWA.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season.
