Detroit Mercy Meets Cleveland State On Wednesday

DETROIT (4/23/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team already knows it is in the postseason and will now end the regular season with two non-conference games starting with a road trip to Cleveland State on Wednesday.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Krenzler Field and will feature live stats and a live webstream on YouTube.

The Titans enter the game at 8-4 overall and another win would tie the school record, set last season. Detroit Mercy is already assured its second-straight winning season and the third in school history.

Detroit Mercy clinched a spot in the postseason with its win last week at Siena and at 5-2 in the conference, the Titans still have a shot at a share of the MAAC regular-season title if Canisius beats Marist on Friday. With that said due to tiebreakers, the Titans can't claim the top seed in the conference tournament and can either be two, three or four seed.

Offensively, junior Seth Mendell leads the MAAC and is 25th in the country with 2.82 goals per game. His 31 total goals also leads the MAAC as does his seven man-up goals, which is sixth in the nation.

Senior Matthew Vangalen tops the conference with 2.67 assists per game - ninth in the country - and his 4.08 points and 49 total points is second in the MAAC and tied for 32nd in the country.

Junior Alex Jarzembowski is second in the MAAC and 18th in the country with a .610 faceoff winning percentage. His 5.75 ground balls per game is also second in the MAAC, while sophomore LSM Paul Manuszak is right behind him in fourth scooping up 4.83 per game.

Defensively, junior Alex Akins is seventh in the MAAC with 1.25 caused turnovers per game, while sophomore goalie Logan Shamblin is among the leaders in saves per game (12.5), save percentage (.530) and. goals-against average (11.08),

Cleveland State comes into the game at 7-7 overall - its best season in school history - as the Vikings look to record their first-ever winning campaign with this being their final game.

The two teams have split the previous two games as the Titans fell 13-6 at Cleveland State in 2017, but came back to register a 12-6 triumph at home last year.

Following the game, the Titans will head out to Utah to face the first-year Utes on Saturday.

MAN-UP VS. MAN-DOWN
  • Detroit Mercy comes into the game first in the MAAC and 21st in the nation in man-up offense at 41.9 percent (18-43), while Cleveland State is 21st in the nation at 39.2 percent (20-51).
  • Defensively, the Titans rank sixth in the MAAC and 44th in the country on the man-down unit at 37.3 percent (19-51) as a unit and Cleveland State is 20th in the nation killing off 30.4 percent (14-46).

MAAC PLAYOFFS STILL TBA
  • The MAAC Championship already has three of its four participants as Detroit Mercy, Marist and Quinnipiac have all clinched spots and the final piece is still to be determined between Canisius and Siena.
  • A Canisius win at Marist on Friday and the Golden Griffins would get in, while a loss would leave the door open for Siena if the Saints were to beat Monmouth at home on Saturday.
  • The Titans will have an eye on the scoreboard because if Canisius does win at Marist on Friday, they would share the conference title with the Golden Griffins and Red Foxes as all would end the season at 5-2 in the MAAC, and even in that scenario, add in a Quinnipiac win at Manhattan on Saturday and that would set up a four-way tie for first heading into the postseason.
  • Due to tiebreakers, the red, white and blue could not get the top seed in a three-way or four-way tie and will either be the 2, 3 or 4 seed.
  • The MAAC Championships is set for next week, May 2-4, at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY.

VANTASTIC
  • Senior Matthew Vangalen set the school record for points last season recording 51 points on a career-high 31 goals with 20 assists and he is on the verge of breaking it with 49 points on the year.

  • Vangalen posted a hat trick with four goals and five points at nationally-ranked Notre Dame and followed that up with three goals and a helper in the win at Marquette and six points on three goals and a school-record six assists at Bellarmine.
