Titans Ice Penguins Behind Mauser's Complete Game Shutout

DETROIT (4/5/19) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team blanked Horizon League foe Youngstown State by a final score of 5-0 on Friday evening.

That was Youngstown State's (15-18, 4-1 HL) first loss in Horizon League play, and ended an 11 game winning streak for the Penguins.

On the day, Jordan Manno had two hits and scored two runs, McKenna Tanguay had one hit, one RBI and scored one run and Kori Keyes had one hit and one RBI.

After getting out of an early jam courtesy of a strikeout and a runner caught stealing at second base, the Titans bats came alive.

In the bottom of the first, Courtney Gilbert started the action with a walk, followed by a picture perfect bunt from Manno, which allowed her to reach safely.

After the Penguins got two outs and Tanguay was behind in the count 1-2, she drove a single back up the middle, bringing Gilbert home and giving the Titans a 1-0 lead.

Tanguay stole second without a throw, followed by a looped a single into center field from Keyes which allowed both runners to come home and score, extending the Titans lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the third, Manno singled up the middle to start off the inning. She then attempted to steal second, and a throwing error allowed her to not only reach second base safely, but head to third.

Once she was at third base, a second throwing error from the Penguins allowed her to score at the plate, bringing the lead to 4-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Keyes started things with a walk, but was forced out on a runner's interference on a hit to the infield from Alyssa Lang

A slow roller back to the pitcher from Taylor Gauthier put Gianangel in a tough spot, and she booted the throw to first base, allowing Lang to come all the way around to home plate and score, giving the Titans a comforable 5-0 cushion.

After she had a five run lead, Ashley Mauser took care of the rest on the mound. She retired nine of the last ten batters she faced and secured a big win for the Titans in the process.

She tossed a complete game shutout, scattering two hits, four walks and seven strikeouts, bringing her record to 8-8 overall and 4-2 in Horizon League play.
