EVANSTON, ILL. (5/17/19) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team made history, even in the midst of a 15-1 defeat to #16 Northwestern on Friday evening.
The Titans played in their first NCAA tournament game at host Northwestern and found themselves leading 1-0 after one inning.
Courtney Gilbert was hit on the elbow and took second base on an errant throw down the right field line on an attempt to pick her off.
With Gilbert on second base,
Ellie Boteler striped a single into left field and drove Gilbert home, giving the Titans a 1-0 lead.
Ashley Mauser started in the circle for the Titans and got out of the first inning damage free, while
Sydney Pollock also had a hit for the Titans.
In the second and third innings, the Wildcats bats exploded, as the Big Ten opponent proved to be too much for the red, white and blue.
Gilbert scored the first run in Titan NCAA tournament history, while the first ever hit and RBI belong to Boteler.
The red, white and blue will face Southern Illinois in an elimination game tomorrow at 5:30 ET, with the winner slated to face the winner of the Louisville-Northwestern game and the loser headed home.
