Titans Upended By Eastern Michigan

DETROIT (8/25/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team once again looked strong in the second half, but could not capitalize on a few prime scoring opportunities as the Titans dropped a 1-0 contest to Eastern Michigan on Sunday.

Sophomore Cece Muskovac made her first collegiate appearance starting in goal and finished with five saves, while sophomore Julie Ann Piechocki fired four shots in the game and two were saved by EMU.

Eastern Michigan (1-0-1) scored in the 54th minute as the Eagles worked the ball across the box and was finished to the side of the goal, just past Muskovac.

Detroit Mercy (0-1-1) was outshot, 12-10, while recording six saves on the day

The red, white and blue will have a week to get ready for the start of its six-game road swing, starting with a trip to Northern Arizona next Sunday, Sept. 1, at 4 p.m.

First Period:
  • EMU came out strong with a couple of shots and three corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of the game
  • Muskovac made her first collegiate save at 33:04
  • The Eagles had three more comer kicks in the last 10 minutes, but could not get a shot on net

Second Period:
  • The Titans came out firing with a pair of shots from Piechocki in the first five minutes
  • EMU got on the board at 53:50
  • The Titans had some good looks on net as Piechocki's corner kick led to a header from senior Casey Couturier that was blocked, while the next corner found its way to sophomore Hailey Wentzloff and her header was on net but saved at 57:57
  • Nearly a minute later, senior Megan Pace had a shot that was saves
  • Off an EMU foul, Piechocki set up a direct kick and it was a boot that was turned away at 67:22 and on the counterattack, Muskovac stopped an Eagles' shot
  • Piechocki had another attempt that was stopped at 74:46
  • Muskovac kept Eastern off the board in the final 15 minutes with three more saves

Game Notes:
  • Eastern Michigan now leads the all-time series, 10-9-4
  • It was EMU's first win at Titan Field since 2001 as the Titans were 4-0-3 in the last seven meetings in the Motor City
  • Muskovac did not see any playing time as a freshman last year
  • Piechocki's first career goal was at EMU last year
