Titans Travel to Clemson for First Road Match of 2019

DETROIT (9/1/2019) -- Coming off a season-opening victory on Friday, the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team heads to South Carolina for its first road match of the season, playing ACC foe Clemson on Labor Day. The 5 p.m. ET match Monday may be seen live via the ACC Network.

The Titans (1-0) open a week-stretch that takes them to South Carolina and then to California next weekend with Detroit Mercy playing San Diego and San Diego State on Sept. 6 and Sept. 8, respectively.

The Tigers, receiving votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, opened the 2019 season with a 4-1 win over South Carolina on Friday at home.

On The Pitch:
  • The Titans and Clemson are meeting for the first time in men's soccer. Detroit Mercy's last meeting with an ACC foe came in 2016, when the Titans tied Pittsburgh in the season opener that season in Pittsburgh, 0-0.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Devin Mendez tallied his first collegiate shutout in the 2-0 season-opening victory over Niagara. Detroit Mercy didn't allow a single shot on goal and allowed just three shots total and none in the second half.
  • The red, white and blue allowing just three shots was the fewest shots allowed since giving up three shots in a 2-1 victory over St. Bonaventure in 2015.
  • Junior forward Mohamad Miri and sophomore forward Kyle Bandyk each scored second half goals in the season opener for the Titans.
  • Senior defender Garret Weaver started his 50th career for the Titans in the season opener; He's started the last 49 matches across three-plus campaigns for Detroit Mercy.
  • Head coach Nicholas Deren '99 is in his 10th full season at the helm of Detroit Mercy and has 58 victories as leader of the program.
Scouting Clemson
  • The Tigers won their 2019 season opener, 4-1 over South Carolina at home on Friday.
  • Clemson went 7-9-1 overall last season, which included a 2-6 ACC record, but is receiving votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll.
  • Sophomore forward Grayson Barber scored two first-half goals in the season opener; Senior forward Adrian Nunez led the team in scoring last season with six goals and 14 points.
  • Head coach Mike Noonan begins his 10th season as leader of the Tigers in 2019 and has led the program to the NCAA Tournament in five of the past six seasons.
The Titans next play at home on Saturday, Sept. 14, opening the Horizon League slate by hosting Milwaukee for a 7 p.m. ET contest.
