Titans Slice Up Indiana State, 3-1, On Friday The 13th

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (9/13/2019) -- The Titans scored just a minute into the contest and never looked back as the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team went on the road and defeated Indiana State, 3-1, on Friday night.

Detroit Mercy (2-3-1) scored on a corner kick just 1:08 into the game as junior Julie Ann Piechocki was able to bend one in over the goalie for an early lead. The Titans then had first-half strikes as freshman Sofia Bellaire and sophomore Emily Lorkowski each scored their first collegiate goals as the red, white and blue took a 3-0 advantage at the break.

Freshman goalie Cassidy Joslin made a season-high 10 saves to register her second win of the season and sophomore Hailey Wentzloff assisted on a pair of the Titan markers.

Detroit Mercy will be back in action on Sunday as the Titans complete their Indiana weekend trip with a match at Purdue Fort Wayne. Game time is set for 1 p.m.

First Period:
  • Junior Rachel Russo had a shot just 30 seconds in
  • A little more than a minute into the game, Piechocki took the corner and hit a beautiful ball that curved into the goal for an early score
  • Freshman Stephanie Maniaci's shot was saved in the 12th minute
  • Joslin made her first save at 13:57
  • Russo had another boot that was saved in the 24th minute
  • Bellaire then posted her first collegiate strike taking a pass from Wentzloff and firing it high over the keeper and to the left side of the goal for a 2-0 at 28:34
  • Joslin made another stop in the 30th minute
  • Lorkowski then beat the defense and lined a shot past the keeper for a 3-0 advantage with 10 minutes left in the half, scoring on her first-ever collegiate shot

Second Period:
  • The Sycamores came out firing, but Joslin posted three saves in the first five minutes and added another in the 52nd minute
  • Sophomore Nasreen Kobeissi ripped a shot high at 55:15
  • Wentzloff had a shot go wide in the 60th minute
  • Joslin intercepted an ISU cross with 19:20 left as she snatched the ball out of the air
  • Sophomore Cece Muskovac made two saves in the final seven minutes
  • Indiana State found the back of the bet with 4:48 remaining

Game Notes:
  • This was the first career meeting with Indiana State
  • Detroit Mercy is now 28-15-3 all-time against current members of the Missouri Valley Conference
  • The three goals are the most by the Titans against a Division I team since beating Eastern Michigan, 3-0, at home in 2017 and the most on the road since blanking Purdue Fort Wayne, 3-0, also in 2017
  • It was the first game that two Titans have scored their first career goals since freshmen Mary LeAnnais and Aubrey Formica each had their first collegiate markers against Marygrove in 2013
  • Piechocki's goal just 1:08 into the match was the fastest score by a Titan since Doyle scored 32 seconds into the contest against Bowling Green in 2017
  • Wentzloff's two helpers are the most by a Titan since Russo had two at NKU last year
  • Joslin now has 29 saves in the last four games
