PHILADELPHIA (9/17/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse program added another pro to its collection as 2019 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year Matthew Vangalen was drafted by the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League on Tuesday night.

He was selected in the third round, 37th overall. 

Vangalen is now the fourth Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse student-athlete to get drafted in the NLL following fellow Canadians Shayne Adams (2015- 2nd RD., 21st overall-Vancouver), Joel Matthews (2012- 4th RD., 31st overall-Buffalo) and Jordan Houtby (2013 - 4th RD., 29th overall-Minnesota).  

A Google Cloud Academic All-American as a senior - the first Titan in school history to earn that distinction - Vangalen ended his career as a three-time All-MAAC player, including the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year as a senior as he broke his own school record with 55 points on 19 goals and a career-high and school record 32 assists. 

He would lead the Titans in points in all three of his years wearing the red, white and blue and finished his collegiate career with a school-record 77 assists, second in school history with 153 points and third with 76 goals.

He helped the Titans post back-to-back winnings campaigns and a program-best nine wins in 2018 and also guiding them to a trip to the MAAC Championship. 

Excellent in the classroom, he was a member of the USILA/Warrior and New Balance Division I Scholar All-American - just the third Titan to earn that accolade - and was a MAAC All-Academic Team in all three of his seasons. 

Besides the NLL, the Titans have seen a number of players get drafted or sign to compete in Major League Lacrosse (MLL) in Charlie Hayes (2019-Denver), Paul Bitetti (2017-Atlanta), Mike Birney (2017-Ohio), Brandon Davenport (2015-17-Ohio), Chris Shevins (2015-17-Ohio) and Jason Weber (2018-Atlanta).
