DETROIT (9/4/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer earned its first win of the season on the road as the Titans blanked Madonna, 1-0, on Wednesday evening.
The win was the first for first-year head coach
Steve Shelton and for freshman goalie
Cassidy Joslin, who made three saves in net in recording her first shutout.
Sophomore
Julie Ann Piechocki scored the lone goal of the contest as she converted on a penalty kick early in the second half.
The Titans outshot the Crusaders, 7-5, and each team had four corner kick opportunities.
Detroit Mercy will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 8, when the red, white and blue visit Michigan State in a noon kick-off.
First Half:
- After Madonna had an early corner kick that did not produce a shot, the Titans had a shot on net by senior Megan Pace at 9:11 that was saved
- Madonna had a couple of headers near the net as one went wide and another was saved by Joslin at 26:55
- Joslin made another stop just two minutes later
Second Half:
- Detroit Mercy came out firing as freshman Stephanie Maniaci had a shot blocked, sophomore Nasreen Kobeissi's boot was saved and junior Olivia Parra sent one that was blocked just four minutes in
- The Titans were awarded a penalty kick as Madonna was called for a yellow card in the box as Piechocki beat the goalie to the right side for a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute
- The Titans kept attacking as Kobeissi had another shot that was saved at 53:31
- Joslin made her third save in the 78th minute
- Madonna had a couple of corner kicks in the last seven minutes of play, but neither saw a shot attempted
Game Notes:
- Detroit Mercy is now 10-0 all-time against Madonna with eight shutouts
- The Titans are now 24-1-1 all-time against non-Division I teams
- It was Piechocki's sixth career goal
- Joslin now has 10 saves in the last two games and 12 on the season
- The Titans were without several student-athletes as they attended to clinicals for their major
