EAST LANSING, Mich. (9/8/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team put together a tough effort, but two second-half goals put the game out of reach as the Titans fell on the road at Michigan State, 3-0, on Sunday.
Freshman goalie
Cassidy Joslin made a season-high nine saves, while the Titans (1-3-1) had two shots on net by senior
Megan Pace and sophomore
Julie Ann Piechocki. Michigan State (5-1) outshot Detroit Mercy, 19-2.
Detroit Mercy will be back in action next week as the red, white and blue visit Indiana State on Friday and future Horizon League member Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday.
First Period:
- The Titans had the first shot of the game as Piechocki's book was saved just three minutes in
- MSU scored in the 11th minute off a breakaway
- Joslin made a save at 14:08
- The Spartans fired a few more shots and Joslin made three more saves the rest of the way
- The Titans had a corner kick opportunity with 30 seconds left, but did not register a shot
Second Period:
- Pace had a look early in the period, but her shot was saved
- Joslin made her fifth stop in the 56th minutes, but four minutes later, the Spartans added a goal
- The Titan keeper made back-to-back saves in the 66th and 67th minute before MSU found the back of the net in the 68h minute
Game Notes:
- Michigan State now leads the all-time series 17-1-1 and is 13-0-1 at home
- The lone Detroit Mercy win in the series was a 5-2 contest in 1996 as the Spartans are 13-0-1 in the last 14 meetings
- The last win over the conference was a big one as Detroit Mercy downed Michigan, 3-2, in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Tournament
- Joslin now has 19 saves in the last three games
