Titans Host Green Bay in Saturday Afternoon Contest

DETROIT (1/10/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team returns to the court for the second game in a four-game homestand Saturday, hosting Horizon League foe Green Bay in a 1 p.m. battle from Calihan Hall. The game may be seen live via ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN Applications.

The Titans are coming off a 63-48 setback to Milwaukee on Thursday night from Calihan Hall. Senior Zoey Oatis tallied her fourth career double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds in the game, while freshman guard Sylare Starks was also in double figures with 13 points for the red, white and blue.

It's the 60th meeting between the two schools all-time in women's basketball.

On The Court:
  • The Titans are 1-3 in the Horizon League after four games with their win coming in a 70-62 road triumph over UIC last week.
  • Senior Zoey Oatis tallied her second double-double of the season and fourth in her Titan career with 19 points and 12 boards against Milwaukee on Thursday.
  • Freshman guard Sylare Starks leads all Horizon League freshmen in scoring at 9.7 points per game; She ranks 19th overall in the league.
  • Oatis ranks second in the Horizon League in steals per game (2.1) and has 11 games of multiple steals in 15 outings this season.
  • Freshman guard Annika Corcoran is averaging 3.0 assists per game across her past six contests and leads the Titans with 30 assists overall.
  • The Titans have earned three Horizon League Freshman of the Week honors from three different players -- Sylare Starks (Nov. 25), Bridgid Fox (Dec. 16) and Markyia McCormick (Dec. 23). It's the first time in league history that three different players from the same team have earned the honor in the same season.
  • The Titans had nine more steals against Milwaukee and are averaging 8.8 thefts per game across their past four outings.
  • The Titans and Phoenix are meeting for the 60th time in the all-time series (Green Bay leads, 51-8).
  • The Titans are one of the youngest teams in NCAA Division I with 10 underclassmen (five freshmen, five sophomores) and holds an average age of 19.3 on its roster.
  • Head coach Bernard Scott is in his fifth season at the helm of the Titans and has led them to two top-four finishes and a Horizon League championship game in 2017.
  • The Titans were picked to finish in ninth place in the 2019-20 Horizon League Preseason Poll.
Scouting Green Bay:
  • Green Bay is coming off a 93-88 road setback to Oakland in Rochester on Thursday. Frankie Wurtz led Green Bay with 25 points in the game, while Madison Wolf pulled down a game-best 18 rebounds. Green Bay knocked down 26-of-29 free throws in the contest.
  • The Phoenix are currently 2-2 in Horizon League play and 7-9 overall on the season.
  • Senior guard Frankie Wurtz leads the team in scoring at 16.0 points per game, while junior Caitlyn Hibner ranks second at 11.4 points per game for Green Bay.
  • Senior Madison Wolf has pulled down a team-high 6.5 boards per game and junior Meghan Pingel has returned from injury to lead the squad in assists per game (3.8).
  • Wurtz ranks fourth in the Horizon League in scoring, third in steals (27) and has scored in double figures 14 times.
Last Time Out
Senior Zoey Oatis notched her fourth career double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, but the Titans dropped a home contest with Milwaukee on Thursday, 63-48, from Calihan Hall. Oatis tallied season-highs in both points and rebounds, sinking 8-of-11 shots from the floor and adding two steals and one block. She also connected on two 3-pointers. Freshman guard Sylare Starks added 13 points, her ninth game scoring in double figures in her rookie campaign.

The Titans had just 13 turnovers in the game, which was among a season-low total and corralled nine steals, while forcing the Panthers into 24 turnovers. Detroit Mercy was out-rebounded, 51-31, and shot 33.3-percent from the field in the contest (21-for-63).

Titan Freshmen Scoring
A bulk of the scoring output for the Titans this season have come from their freshmen class with the five true Detroit Mercy freshmen scoring 53-percent of the points in the 2019-20 season. Titan freshmen have accounted for 466 of the 880 points scored this season (52.9 percent). 

Sylare Starks leads the team and all Horizon League freshmen at 9.7 points per game, while classmate Markyia McCormick is second on the squad and third in the league in scoring at 8.1 points per game. Bridgid Fox (6.1 ppg) and Annika Corcoran (5.7 ppg) are fifth and sixth on the squad in scoring. Further, 51 of the 73, 3-pointers made this season have been by the freshmen class -- Starks (20), Corcoran (13), McCormick (11), Abbie McDowell (6) and Fox (1).

Detroit Mercy returns to the court next weekend with a pair of games in Detroit. The Titans host Cleveland State on Thursday, Jan. 16 from Calihan Hall at 7 p.m. ET and then welcome Youngstown State to town on Saturday, Jan. 18 for a 1 p.m. contest.
