Davis Tabbed Tabbed To Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List

BOSTON (1/9/2020) -- University of Detroit Mercy sophomore guard Antoine Davis started the year on all the preseason awards watch lists, and as we head into mid-season, he still finds his name among the honored players.

On Thursday, Davis was named to the Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List,  presented annually to the nation's top Division I mid-major player.

Davis is currently second in the country and leading the Horizon League in scoring at 24.9 points per game, trailing only Markus Howard of Marquette (25.8 ppg.). In his 15 games on the year, he has posted 20 or more in 12 contests with four games at 30 or more, including a season-high 35 against SIUE and 31 at #1 Gonzaga.

He also tops the Horizon League and is among the top 50 in the nation in total points (374), 3-pointers per game (3.4), free-throw percentage (91.6), free throws made (87) and steals per game (2.0).

Earlier this season, he became the quickest Titan ever to score 1,000 career points, doing so in his 39th game to surpass the late Dave DeBusschere - a NBA Hall-Of-Famer who was named one of the top 50 players in NBA history - as the fastest player in school history to reach that feat.

Davis is also the current active leading scorer in the country at 25.6 points per game in 45 career games.

The award honors Henson, the former Illinois and New Mexico State coach, who won 775 games in 41 seasons. Henson is the winningest coach in  Illinois basketball history with 423 victories. During his 21 seasons (1975-1996), Henson led the Fighting Illini to 16 postseason appearances, including 12 NCAA tournaments and a Final Four appearance in 1989.

The 2019-20 Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award will be announced in April 2020 in Atlanta, GA, site of the men's Division I NCAA Basketball Championship.

Players on teams from the following conferences are eligible for the award: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Great West, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast.
