PONTIAC, Mich. (2/14/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team dropped its home opener Friday afternoon, falling 24-6 to Pac-12 opponent Arizona State in the first meeting ever between the two programs. The game was played from Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac.
Sophomore midfielder
Elise Harder had a team-high three points on two goals and one assist, junior attacker
Kamryn Corraro had two second-half goals and junior attacker
Kristina Ellis added two assists for the Titans (0-2). Freshmen attackers
Marina Butler and
Annie Gilbert each scored their first collegiate goals in the contest for the red, white and blue.
In net, Detroit Mercy goalkeepers made 12 saves with junior
Maddie Johnson and freshman
Hannah Shrader each turning aside six shots on goal. Shrader also had a team-high six ground balls.
Defensively, senior defender
Tegan McManus had two caused turnovers, with sophomore
Taryn McManus and Johnson each adding one caused turnover. In the draw circle, junior
Taylor Cantelon led the way for the second-straight game with three DC, while
Taryn McManus added two draw controls.
Arizona State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the game before Butler netted her first collegiate goal off a free-position shot. The Sun Devils, in their third year as a program, scored the next five goals to take a 10-1 lead with 13 minutes left in the first half, before Harder scored two goals in a matter of 2:46. Harder scored her first off a feed from Ellis before scoring off a free-position opportunity to cut the ASU lead to 11-3 with 9:00 remaining in the opening period.
Detroit Mercy scored three more goals in the second half -- including two-straight early in the stanza -- with Gilbert scoring her first collegiate goal four minutes into the second half. Ellis then connected with Corraro for the next goal of the game. Corraro added another goal late in the contest, but ASU went on a run to seal the victory.
The Titans were out-shot in the game, 43-14, but the red, white and blue were on-target with their shots, putting 13 of 14 on net (93 percent). ASU also held the advantages in draw controls (23-9), ground balls (23-12) and caused turnovers (11-4). Corraro led Detroit Mercy in shots for the second-straight game, putting all five of her shots on frame.

Detroit Mercy returns to the lacrosse field next Thursday, Feb. 20, heading to Indianapolis for a non-league game against Butler. The opening draw of the contest is set for 3 p.m. ET. The Titans' next home game is Sunday, Feb. 23 from Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac, when the red, white and blue host old ASUN rival Jacksonville in a 12:30 p.m. ET game.
