Ryan Figueiras posted a career-high five goals and seniors
Alex Jarzembowski and
Seth Mendell each recorded a hat trick as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team used a 7-0 run in the second half and a 4-0 spurt to end the contest en route to a record-breaking 20-13 victory over Bellarmine on Tuesday afternoon at Ultimate Soccer Arenas.
The 20 goals set a new school record, surpassing the 19 against Mercer in 2011, while the 13 assists in the contest tied a program-high.
Jarzembowski was also 24-of-31 in faceoffs with seven ground balls as he posted a career-best three goals. Mendell added two assists for five points and junior
Brett Erskine tied his career-high with six points on two markers and a career-high four assists.
Detroit Mercy (2-1) saw Bellarmine (2-3) strike first with three-straight goals, but then responded with nine in a row for a 9-3 lead after one. The Knights would counter with eight-straight to jump out in front, 11-9, late in the third, but the red, white and blue ended that run with seven-straight goals for a 16-11 lead with 11:35 left in the contest and sealed the win with four goals in the last six minutes of action.
Junior
Paul Manuszak picked up a game-high eight ground balls, scored a goal and handed out an assist, while redshirt freshman
Kyle Waters had two goals and two assists. Freshman
Ryan Birney found the back of the net twice, sophomore
AJ Van Voorhis tallied a goal and two assists for a career-tying three points and junior
Matt Blevins registered two assists.
Junior
Logan Shamblin made 12 saves in net for the win - tying a school mark with his 20th career triumph - and senior
Sam McClain had two caused turnovers and four GB's.
The Titans outshot the Knights, 43-40, but dominated ground balls to the tune of a 46-28 advantage. They also won 27-of-37 faceoffs and were 18-of-21 on clears.
Detroit Mercy will now get ready for Jesuit-rival Marquette on Saturday, Feb. 22, in a Noon start time at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac. Tickets are slated for $10 and can be purchased here at

First Period:
- Despite winning a couple of early faceoffs and causing two turnovers, Bellarmine opened a 3-0 lead midway through the period
- The Titans started a 9-0 run off a faceoff win by Jarzembowski that saw Mendell pick up the ground ball and feed Erskine for the score
- Right after that, another win by Jarzembowski saw Manuszak pick up the ground ball and find Mendell for the score at 6:19
- Redshirt freshman Jake Freedlander won a faceoff and that led to a goal by Birney to tie it up at 3-3 at 5:55
- Off another faceoff win, Erskine found the back of the net at 4:57, and yet another faceoff victory, saw Jarzembowski pick up the ground ball and go right to the net, beating the keeper for a 5-3 advantage at 4:48
- The Titans extended their lead to 6-5 as Mendell located Waters for the marker at the 3:39 mark and a little more than a minute later, Erskine fed Waters for the score and it was a 7-3 game with 2:16 remaining
- Shamblin came up with a save and that started an offensive possession and Blevins set up Erskine for a strike and an 8-3 contest with 1:19 left
- Jarzembowski won the next faceoff and Mendell would find freshman Kyle Loken, who scored his first collegiate goal to make it 9-3 with 36 seconds on the clock
Second Period:
- Bellarmine scored at 12:03 and 10:42
- Shamblin came up with stops at 8:05, 7:33 and 5:27
- The Titans then had to fight off an extra-man attack and were two men down for 30 seconds, but Shamblin was able to make another save
- The Knights scored two more times in the period to make it a 9-7 game at the half
Third Period:
- Shamblin made four more saves and McClain had a caused turnover, but Bellarmine scored four more times to take an 11-9 lead with 1:48 left in the period
- The Titans then went on the man-up and Waters found Mendell for the score to stop the Knights' spurt with 56 ticks left
- Jarzembowski won the next faceoff and Waters was able to find Manuszak and he buried his shot to knot it at 11-11 with 50 seconds remaining
- The Titans then went ahead 12-11 as Van Voorhis set up Figueiras' first marker of the day
Fourth Period:
- The same combination that ended the third hooked up together in the fourth to make it 13-11 at the 13:38 mark
- On the man-up attack, Birney beat the defense for a 14-11 advantage at 12:13 and off another faceoff win by Jarzembowski, Blevins found Figueiras and he tickled the twine for a 15-11 score with 11:45 left
- Jarzembowski won the next faceoff and again streaked down the field to fire one in for a 16-11 score
- The Knights pulled within three, 16-13, but Jarzembowski once again had the win, scooped up the ground ball and beat the goalie for a 17-13 lead at the 5:51 mark
- Van Voorhis found the back of the net at 3:10 for an 18-13 lead and off a Shamblin save, Erskine was able to set up Figueiras for his fourth goal at 1:47
- Figueiras ended his career day with his fifth marker with 44 seconds left
Game Notes:
- The Titans are now 5-7 all-time against Bellarmine, but have won five of the last six in the series
- The Titans tied a school-record with 27 faceoff wins in the game as they had 27 at Bellarmine last season
- The 33 total points in the game broke a school record of 31 the Titans had at Manhattan in 2018, when they had 18 goals and 13 assists
- The 46 ground balls are tied for the fourth-most in school history
- Erskine also had six points last season at Bellarmine with five goals and an assist
- Jarzembowski was posted a school-record 27-of-33 in faceoffs in last year's game at Bellarmine and also picked up a school-record 15 ground balls
- Jarzembowski is now in sole possession of second place in school history with 178 ground balls, trailing only Jordan Houtby's 289
- It was the 12th career hat trick for Mendell
- Mendell is now fifth in school history with 103 points, just one shy of fourth place
- Mendell passed former teammate Matthew Vangalen for third place in school history with 78 goals
- Mendell is now tied for seventh in school history with nine man-up goals
- Birney now has four goals on the season
- Shamblin tied Jason Weber for first in school history with 20 wins
- Figueiras is the 10th Titan all-time to score at least five goals in a game and the second this season behind Waters' five at Jacksonville in the season opener
