Titans Host Marquette In Jesuit Showdown On Saturday In Pontiac

DETROIT (2/20/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team will look to keep up its winning ways on Saturday as the Titans welcome Jesuit brothers Marquette into town at their indoor home at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac.

Game time is set for Noon and will feature live stats but no live broadcast.

The Titans are 2-1 on the year with a season-opening 15-14 victory at Jacksonville and record-breaking 20-13 triumph over Bellarmine, where the 20 goals set a program mark for scores.

Detroit Mercy saw three players tally hat tricks for the second time in school history in the contest as senior Seth Mendell posted the 12th of his career, junior Ryan Figueiras scored a career-high five times and senior Alex Jarzembowski netted a career-best three markers. 

Junior Brett Erskine leads the team with 13 points on seven goals and a team-best six assists, while redshirt Kyle Waters has a team-high eight goals with 11 points. 

Jarzembowski is also 56-of-94 (59.6%) in faceoffs, while junior Paul Manuszek has a team-high 19 ground balls and senior Sam McClain has a team-best six caused turnovers. 

Marquette is 2-1 on the season with a pair of 11-10 wins over Cleveland State and Bellarmine and a tough 11-9 loss to Jacksonville.

AGAINST THE BIG EAST
  • The Titans are looking for their second victory against a team from the BIG EAST as Detroit Mercy is 1-8 all-time against the conference.
  • The lone win was a 15-12 triumph at Marquette last season. 

ALL-TIME AT ULTIMATE SOCCER ARENAS
  • The Titans are 8-4 all-time in games played at Ultimate Soccer Arenas.
  • In 2015, Detroit Mercy was a perfect 3-0 at Ultimate Soccer Arenas, including a thrilling 9-8 victory over Ohio State, the program's first-ever win over the Buckeyes. 
  • The highest attended game in school history saw 1,909 fans watch the Titans take on Michigan in 2014. 

JESUIT PRIDE
  • Detroit Mercy is one of eight Jesuit schools playing Division I lacrosse.
  • The others are Canisius, Fairfield, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Loyola (Md.), Marquette and St. Joseph's.
  • The Titans have played four Jesuit schools in Canisius (6-6), Marquette (1-6), Georgetown (0-1) and Saint Joseph's (0-1).

  • Detroit Mercy is 1-6 all-time against Marquette, including 0-2 at home. 
  • The first victory was on the road last season, 15-12.

TITANS PICKED SECOND BY COACHES AND INSIDE LACROSSE
  • The Titans were picked to finish second in the league behind defending champion Marist by Inside Lacrosse.
  • Monmouth was selected third, Canisius and Quinnipiac fifth.
  • In the MAAC coaches poll, Marist was picked to win the league with 63 votes and seven first-place nods, while the Titans totaled 49 points and one first-place tally. Quinnipiac (42) was slated third, Canisius (41) fourth and Monmouth (37) fifth. Rounding out the poll was Siena (26), Manhattan (22) and St. Bonaventure (8). 

OFFENSE OFF TO A GREAT START
  • Through three games, the Titans have tallied 44 goals, the most ever in the first three games of the year, topping the 31 it had in the first three of 2013.

TITANS BREAK OFFENSIVE RECORDS
  • Junior Ryan Figueiras posted a career-high five goals and seniors Alex Jarzembowski and Seth Mendell each recorded a hat trick as Detroit Mercy set a few school records and tied another in a 20-13 victory over Bellarmine at home. 
  • In total, nine different Titans found the back of the net. 
  • The 20 goals set a new school record, surpassing the 19 against Mercer in 2011, while the 13 assists in the contest tied a program-high with the 13 they had at Manhattan in 2018. 
  • Detroit Mercy also scored nine goals in a row in the first for the most goals ever scored in a period and the most ever scored in a row in the history of the program.

WIN AT THE X
  • Last season, Alex Jarzembowski set a school record with 27 faceoff wins at Bellarmine - which also helped the team set a school record with 27.
  • This time around at home against the Knights, Jarzembowski and redshirt freshman Jake Freedlander combined to win 27 faceoffs to tie the school mark.
  • Jarzembowski was 27-of-33, while the rookie Freedlander was 3-of-6.

50/50 BALLS THE KEY TO SUCCESS
  • The Titans won the battle of ground balls, 46-23, against Bellarmine with the 46 ground balls tied for the fourth-most in school history.
  • In fact, the Titans have won all five of their top ground balls games in school history.

NOTHING BUT JARZ
  • Senior Alex Jarzembowski already has his name on top of the Titan record book in every faceoff category.
  • He owns a career winning percentage of .568 tallying 506 victories - both first in Titan history.
  • He has now won double-digit faceoffs in 30 career games, including 11 games with 15 or more faceoffs wins and three with 20 or more. 
  • Already this season he is at 59.6 percent (56-of-94), which includes an 18-of-33 effort at Jacksonville and a 24-of-31 mark versus Bellarmine, where he also had seven ground balls and scored a career-high three goals. 
  • The two-time All-MAAC Second Team faceoff specialists is coming off a school-record with 213 wins and a 60.0 winning percentage, good for second in the MAAC and 18th in Division I. His 82 ground balls led the Titans and was second in the conference and 29th in Division I as well as 
  • third in school history.
  • He also added some offense scoring six goals on the year, including four goals on his first four shots of the season. 
  • Jarzembowski broke a school-record going 27-of-33 with a program-best 15 ground balls in the victory at Bellarmine, where he won the game's last 13 faceoffs. The 27 wins was tied for first in the MAAC and the fourth most in the country on the year.

THE BIG LOGAN
  • Junior Logan Shamblin is back to lead the Titan defense and the netminder has already earned a couple of preseason accolades, including the Player of the Year by Inside Lacrosse. 
  • He is the reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Year as he started all 15 games in net and recorded his second-straight winning season with eight wins, while finishing third in the MAAC with a career-best 11.47 saves per game, fifth in school history. His 172 saves was also a career-best and fifth in the record books, and he also tallied a .512 save percentage and an 11.93 goals against mark along with six caused turnovers and 32 ground balls, fifth on the squad. 
  • He had double-digit saves in 10 games on the year with a career-high 21 saves at Siena in a postseason-clinching win.
  • Logan now has 22 games with double-digit saves and six with 15 or more in his career. 
  • After earning the win against Bellarmine, he now has 20 career victories, tied for first in school history with former teammate Jason Weber. 

HIGH WATER MARK
  • Redshirt freshman Kyle Waters had a collegiate debut to remember tallying five goals and six assists at Jacksonville.
  • Not only that, he scored the game-tying goal with five minutes left and the game-winner with 1:45 on the clock
  •  The five goals and six points were the most ever by a Titan playing in his first game and he became the ninth player in school history to register at least five goals in a game.
  • On the season, he has 11 points on eight goals and three assists. 

ERSKINE SHINES
  • Junior Brett Erskine started the year with a bang as he posted four goals and five points in the win at Jacksonville, including the first Titan goal of 2020 and started the game-ending 4-0 run with 8:27 left. 
  • In the win against Bellarmine he tied his career-high with six points on two goals and a career-best four assists.
  • Erskine currently leads the team with 13 points on seven goals and a team-best six assists. 
  • He posted 22 goals in each of his first two seasons and now has 51 goals, 29 assists and 80 points in 32 games.
  • He is also one of the most accurate shooters in school history at 45.1 percent, including 73.5 percent on shots on goal. 

FEAR THE LSM
  • Junior Paul Manuszak was back to his old tricks in the season opener, coming away with a team-high five ground balls with one caused turnover and firing two shots at Jacksonville. 
  • His caused turnover came at a huge time as he helped the Titans kill off a one-minute penalty with under a minute to go in the game to help seal the triumph.
  • He came back with three caused turnovers and six GB's at Ohio State and had a team-high eight ground balls with a goal and an assist against Bellarmine. 
  • Manuszak now has 25 caused turnovers and 108 ground balls in his career to go with nine goals and 13 points. 

NO FEAR IN VOORHIS
  • Sophomore AJ Van Voorhis had a solid start to his collegiate career and was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team 
  • He netted a goal at Jacksonville to start the season and had two assists at Ohio State and a career-tying three points on two assists and a goal versus Bellarmine. 

FIG ALERT
  • Junior Ryan Figueiras helped the Titans put away the Knights of Bellarmine by scoring a career-high five goals in the 20-13 victory. 
  • Four of his goals came in the final period and that was after finding the back of the net for his first with eight seconds left in the third period. 
  • Last season, he tallied 11 points on nine goals and two assists along with 17 ground balls last season.
  • On the year, he already has seven markers.
