SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (2/4/2020) -- University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball sophomore
Antoine Davis received some great news today as the high-scoring guard was named a top-10 finalist for the Jerry West Award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Fans can now have a say in the winner by voting
here.
Named after Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West, the annual honor in its sixth year recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel narrowed down the watch list from 20 to just 10 candidates.
"The Hall of Fame is proud to establish connections between current athletes and fans with the iconic figures in our game, such as Jerry West," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "All athletes in this top ten list should be proud to be nominated for such an honor, and we are privileged to have Jerry West's continued involvement in the Starting Five, as his unique insights and expertise will aid us in trimming this list further in the next month."
Davis is currently third in the country and leading the Horizon League in scoring at 23.3 points per game as he has posted 15 games with 20 or more points and four 30-point outings on the year. He had a season-high 35 against SIUE, 31 at #1 Gonzaga and 33 at Ohio.Â
He has 515 total points on the season - also tops in the HL and fourth in the nation - and he also ranks in the top 10 in the nation in total 3-pointers (75), 3-pointers per game (3.41), free throw percentage (91.3%) and free throws made (116). He is also 61st with 40 steals, 88th with 4.5 assists per game and 102nd in three-point field-goal percentage hitting at 31.3 percent.Â
