Starks Earns Horizon League All-Freshman Team Honors

INDIANAPOLIS (3/2/2020) -- University of Detroit Mercy freshman guard Sylare Starks (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead) was voted to the five-player 2019-20 Horizon League All-Freshman Team, with the women's basketball postseason honors and awards being announced by the league office on Monday.

In her first season in the red, white and blue, Starks led the Titans and all Horizon League freshmen in scoring at 10.2 points per game during the regular season. Starks was one of two Titans to start all 29 games during the regular season and also scored in double figures a team-high 17 times. She currently is fifth in the Horizon League in minutes played per game (30.8), sixth in 3-pointers made (50) and seventh in 3-pointers made per game (1.7).

Starks also leads all league rookies in scoring during Horizon League play and ranks 14th in the Horizon League overall in conference games at 10.3 points per game. She scored in double figures on 10 occasions out of 18 HL contests. She is third in Detroit Mercy women's basketball freshman history in 3-pointers made (50) and 10th in scoring (296 points). Starks is also second on the team in steals (23), fourth in assists (43) and fifth in rebounding (2.7 per game) and has shot a team-best 84.0 percent from the free throw line this season.

Starks is joined on the All-Freshman Team by Northern Kentucky's Ivy Turner, Oakland's Alona Blackwell and the Wright State duo of Shamarre Hale and Jada Roberson.

It's the third time under head coach Bernard Scott that a Titan freshman has earned All-Freshman Team laurels and second time in the past three seasons. It's also the ninth time in the past 11 seasons that Detroit Mercy has placed someone on the All-Freshman/Newcomer Team (league format was switched from Newcomer to Freshman Team in 2013-14).
