DETROIT (4/15/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy Department of Athletics is unveiling its All-Decade Teams of the 2010s, compiling the best student-athletes across the past 10 seasons (2010-19) into a First and Second Team in each intercollegiate sport. Up next is men's soccer, which captured two regular-season championships during the past decade.
The Titans earned Horizon League regular-season championships in 2012 and 2014, earning six league victories in both seasons. The Titans shared the 2014 regular-season crown at 18 points. Detroit Mercy accumulated 60 victories overall during the decade -- all under head coach
Nicholas Deren '99 -- and earned 31 more ties with opponents.
Detroit Mercy saw several men's soccer student-athletes earn individual accolades from the league and at a national level during the decade. Adam Bedell was both the Horizon League Player of the Year and HL Offensive Player of the Year in 2012. Bedell was the first Titan to ever be drafted, as he was selected No. 45 overall in the 2014 Major League Soccer draft. Both Ya Ya Toure (2010) and Spiro Pliakos (2014) earned Horizon League Freshman of the Year honors during the decade.
Goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher, who tied a school record with 19 shutouts, became the first player in the Horizon League to earn the league's Defensive Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year honor in the same year, doing so in 2014. He also set a Horizon League record with eight Horizon League Player of the Week honors during his standout career.
Nine Titans were named First Team All-Horizon League during those 10 seasons, while 19 Detroit Mercy men's soccer student-athletes earned All-League honors overall. Pliakos became the second player in school history to earn All-League honors in all four seasons of his career and also became the first Titan male student-athlete to be named First Team Academic All-America.
Matt Ybarra also earned Academic All-American honors during his career and earned the Cecil N. Coleman award, the highest honor from the Horizon League during his senior season. Tyler Moorman was also All-Region and Scholar-All-Region. Toure (2010), Bedell (2012), Pliakos (2014, 2015) and Moorman (2017) were all voted All-Region during the decade.
The red, white and blue had two players lead the Horizon League in scoring during the decade with Bedell scoring 11 goals during the 2012 season, and also leading the conference in points that year with 27. Moorman then shared the goal-scoring lead in the Horizon League during the 2017 season, also scoring 11 goals during that campaign.
All-League honors, award winners, standout and record-breaking performances, academic achievements and accolades as well as submissions from fans were all considered for each of the Detroit Mercy All-Decade Teams of the 2010s.
