DETROIT (9/18/2020) -- The 34th Annual Detroit Mercy Tommy Titan Invitational will still go on this season - virtually - and the results are now in.

The results committee has declared champions for the 34th Annual Tommy Titan Cross Country. For their efforts on the Cass-Benton course, James N. Murray '93 will be the 4-mile champion and Kayla Hughes '20 will be the 5k victor. Murray ran 31:21, while Hughes was at 20:02.

"The virtual run was a success and is really old hat for us," said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Guy Murray '89. "In Spirit runs have been a tradition with our events long before the GPS mapping watches made virtual a happening. The In Spirit runs date back to our open mile run at the official opening of Titan Field in 2008.  Chris Imber '99 was declared the host of that mile in '08 and Jim Furkis '00 and Matt Dow '90 competing, and they have not missed many over the years."

The virtual race was held from Sept. 1-13 as rummers completed a 5k on the course of their choice during the race period.

The Tommy Titan race always included an entry waiver for all in the Titan community but donations to the program were and still are welcomed. $10 was the 2020 entry fee or $5 if you want to go retro for the entry to the first open race run in 1990, but anyone can make the annual donation for 2020 and support the university, #DetroitMercyTnF & #DetroitMercyXC by visiting https://www.udmercy.edu/giving/donate/athletics (put Cross Country/Track in the drop down menu) Looking forward to a big turn out for the 2020 Tommy Titan!

The event is one of the longest Titan traditions in school history as it dates back to a women's only race in 1987 with the men's beginning the following season.

The race does plan to return to Cass Benton Park in Northville in 2021 and the date would be the traditional first Saturday after Labor Day, Sept. 11, 2021.
