CHICAGO (10/17/2021) -- The University of Detroit women's soccer team overcame an early deficit and for the second time in four games, sophomore
Erica Toupin netted a game-winning goal as the Titans beat the UIC Flames, 2-1, on the road in overtime on Sunday.
The match was knotted at 1-1 when senior
Hailey Wentzloff set up Toupin, who beat the keeper for her fourth goal of the year. It came just a few games after she scored both goals in a 2-1 win at Wright State with the game-winner coming with less than 20 seconds on the clock.Â
Sophomore
Jazmine Scott made six saves in net to pick up the win as she help stifle a Flames' offense that outshot the red, white and blue, 16-5.Â
Detroit Mercy (3-12-1, 2-6-1 HL) saw UIC (1-11-3, 1-6-2) score just six minutes into the contest as the Flames controlled the first half, outshooting the Titans by a 10-1 margin. The lone shot was on goal off the foot of sophomore
Paige Myers.
In the second half, UIC had a couple of shots to start the period, but off a corner kick, freshman
Sarah Soraghan had a shot that was blocked. It came to freshman
Erica Leinweber, who then was able to corral it and get one past the keeper for her fourth strike of the season and the second in as many games in the 52nd minute.Â
Scott would register three more stops the rest of the way to keep the game at 1-1, including a save with 36 seconds remaining.Â
The Titans will close out the regular season with two home games, starting with Purdue Fort Wayne in town on Saturday, Oct. 23, in a soccer doubleheader as the women's game starts at 3:00 p.m. followed by the men hosting Robert Morris at 7:00 p.m.
