Titans, Golden Grizzlies Complete Metro Series Match-Up In 2-2 Draw

DETROIT (10/2/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team went the distance with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in a 2-2 double-overtime tie from Titan Field Saturday night on Homecoming.

The Titans (2-3-4, 1-1-2 HL) got the first goal of the game from redshirt-senior defender Kyle Bandyk eight minutes in off a corner kick feed from redshirt-senior midfielder Daniel Iyok. The goal was Bandyk's second on the season, while the assist was Iyok's third.

Oakland (3-4-2, 2-1-1 HL) would answer back to tie the score 1-1 in the 34th minute and that is how it would stand at halftime.

The Golden Grizzlies would claim their lone lead of the match 12 minutes into the second half taking a 2-1 advantage.

Detroit Mercy would level the score at 2-2 nearly six minutes later on a penalty kick goal by Bandyk, his second goal of the game and third on the year. The Titans pushed the ball down the sideline deep into Oakland's end of the field when a takedown in the box led to the penalty kick opportunity. Bandyk's goal marks his second penalty kick goal of the year for the Titans and the second as a team.

Bandyk finished the match with four points, putting his season total at a team-high seven.

The red, white, and blue offense tied a season-high in shots with 18, placing three on goal. They also generated three corner kick opportunities, including the first of the game resulting in Bandyk's first tally.

Redshirt-freshman Jonathan Kliewer made a career-high eight saves on the night, beating his previous best of seven stops in the season opener against Michigan. Kliewer had four saves in each of the halves in regulation time, while the Titans' defense allowed just one shot by Oakland in overtime.

After picking up a point in Horizon League play against Oakland, the Titans will be back in action next Saturday, Oct. 9, as they travel to Highland Heights, Kentucky, to take on Northern Kentucky.
