Toupin Scores Twice As Titans Drop Raiders

DAYTON, Ohio (10/7/2021) -- Sophomore Erica Toupin scored twice - including the game-winner with less than 20 seconds left - as the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team prevailed in a thrilling 2-1 win over the Wright State Raiders on Thursday night in a Horizon League Matchup.

The match was scoreless at the half, but saw the Titans fire off six shots, landing one on net, while adding five corner kicks.

Detroit Mercy (2-10-1, 1-4-1 HL) would get on the board first thanks to the second goal of the year from Toupin in the 53rd minute. The Titans were able to win the ball off a Wright State throw-in and when the ball was pushed down the sideline, it was played off a header by a Raiders defender. Toupin was able to get under it and found the back of the net.

The Raiders (4-6-3, 2-2-2 HL) would tie it at 1-1 moments later in the 56th minute of play.

As the game looked like it was destined for overtime, the Titans made one final push towards the box. Freshman forward Erica Leinweber was on the receiving end of a ball played into the near side of the box. She played a cross on net that was deflected onto the foot of Toupin, who turned and fired her second of the game past the keeper, bringing the score to 2-1 with just seconds remaining. Toupin finished the match with four shots and her first multi-goal performance of her Titan career.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jazmine Scott got the start in the contest making both of her saves following the Wright State goal. The first came in the 75th minute while the other came in the 87th minute.

Detroit Mercy finished the Thursday night battle with 16 shots - six of which were on net - and seven corner kicks. Junior forward Taylor Stanley had four shots on the match, tied with Toupin for the team lead. Senior midfielder Emily Lorkowski added three shots, while Leinweber and senior midfielder Julie Ann Piechocki each had two shots.

Following the last-second heroics at Wright State, the red, white, and blue will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 10, from Titan Field as they welcome in the IUPUI Jaguars at 1:00 p.m.
