Madut Akec tallied a double-double with a career-high 14 points and career-best 13 rebounds and senior
Antoine Davis netted 16 points, but a hot-shooting Wyoming team was too much as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell 85-47 on the road on Wednesday night.
Senior
Matt Johnson added nine points and five rebounds and Davis handed out three assists.
Wyoming scored the first six points of the game before graduate senior
Kevin McAdoo stopped that run with a 3-pointer. The Cowboys would later open a double-digit lead at 25-8 midway through the first half before taking a 40-21 lead at the break.
The Cowboys would extend their lead to as many as 40, 85-45, late in the game.
Detroit Mercy will be back in action on Saturday as the Titans visit Toledo in a 7:00 p.m. match-up. Â
First Period:
- McAdoo hit a triple to stop a 6-0 run to start the game
- A basket by Davis and later a 3-pointer made it 19-8 with 12:28 on the clock
- Davis would hit a jumper, Johnson nailed a three and Akec went inside for a jumper to make it 29-18 with 6:34 left
- Johnson connected on another three to cut it to 40-21 and that's how it went into the half
Second Period:
- Akec had two baskets with the second being a three to make 52-28 at the 13:46 mark
- A Johnson bucket followed by one from Davis had the score at 58-32 with 11:37 remaining
- Akec nailed a three for his career-high 14th point with 4:24 on the clock
Game Notes:
- Wyoming now leads the all-time series 3-2 as the teams have defended home court in the series
- Detroit Mercy is now 81-34 all-time on opening day, but has dropped five in a row
- The Titans have not won a true road opener since 2000
- Davis now has 2,056 career points, 263 off the school record
- Davis extended his consecutive free-throw streak to 54-straight, the longest in the nation
- Akec's previous career highs were 10 points and eight rebounds at Tulane in 2020
