Titans' Second Half Rally Comes Up Short at Canisius

Pruitt and Washington score team-high 16 points, Murua posts second straight double-double

BUFFALO, NY - Senior Monique Pruitt put forth a solid overall effort posting a team-high 16 points on 7-of-19 shooting with seven rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Sophomore Irene Murua also posted her second consecutive double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds and four assists as Detroit Mercy dropped a hard-fought non-conference game at Canisius on Tuesday night. Graduate student Brandi Washington also poured in a team-high 16 points going 3-for-7 from 3-point range.

Freshman Akyia Baker also chipped in with six points with four rebounds and three steals. 

For the game, Detroit Mercy (0-5) was once again solid on the defensive end forcing 24 Canisius (2-3) turnovers while grabbing eight steals. The Titans cashed in 22 points off those turnovers and had 27 second-chance points after grabbing a season-high 19 offensive rebounds and 43 total boards. 

The Titans trailed 30-25 at halftime and opened the second half  on a 11-0 run to go up 36-30. However, the Golden Griffins closed out the quarter on 5-0 run and 10-4 overall to take a 45-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Detroit Mercy's offense went cold, only scoring 11 points with six coming from the free throw line and another five from Washington with a jumper and a 3-pointer with 37 seconds remaining.

In the first quarter, the Titans were up 9-3 before Canisius closed out the quarter on a 10-4 run to lead 14-13. Canisius added their second big run with a 10-5 spurt to close out the half.

After the holiday break, the Titans will travel to Akron on Monday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
