DETROIT (11/30/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team has announced the signing of Sonny Johnson to a national letter of intent.
Johnson is a 5-10 guard out of Cleveland, Ohio, who is a three-star prospect and had offers from several high-profile schools including Michigan State, Nebraska and Penn State.
"Sonny comes from a basketball family," said head coach
Mike Davis. "He's a really good point guard with a great feel for the game and is a great get for our program."
He is ranked as the fifth-best player in Ohio and a top-200 player in the country according to 247Sports. He was also listed as a top-10 point guard in the class of 2022 by ESPN and Rivals.
He averaged 15.0 points and 6.0 assists as a sophomore until a knee injury ended his season. To that point, his team was ranked in the top 15 in the region. He came back as a junior and tallied 11.0 points and 4.0 assists in almost half a season.
Johnson is a member of the National Honor Society and comes from a basketball family as his dad - and high school coach - Sonny Johnson played at Ohio and he also had two uncles that played at Miami Ohio and Kent State and a cousin who has committed to Ohio State.
Detroit Mercy will be in action tonight at Northeastern in a 7:00 p.m. tip.
