BRIGHTON, Mich. (2/22/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team and visiting Milwaukee couldn't get on the scoreboard during the first 90 minutes of play in Monday's Horizon League match, but it took just 83 seconds into overtime for the Panthers to score the Golden Goal as the Titans fell 1-0 indoors from the Legacy Center in Brighton.
The Panthers (2-2, 2-2 Horizon League) scored at the 1:23 mark of the first overtime session with a give-and-go in the box, with Raul Medina playing the ball to Joshua Kidder, who then got it back to Medina, as he finished with a hit to the far side of the post and past a diving Titan goalkeeper
Devin Mendez.
The Titans (1-3, 1-3 HL) out-shot Milwaukee during the opening half, 7-6, and had a couple of good chances during the first 45 minutes, especially during a flurry of opportunities with just 4 minutes left until halftime as juniors
Ben Al-Gharabally,
Ryan Halloran and
Bennett Brooks all putting shots on goal. Freshman
Luke Winters also had a header look on net, but it was blocked in the 33rd minute.
Freshman
Samory Powder ripped a shot from close range that missed the frame in the 50th minute for the first shot of the second half, but the game was scoreless still. Midway through the second half, Detroit Mercy had three-straight corner kicks which finished with a shot by Halloran and another by senior
Mohamad Miri.
Mendez made a good save on Milwaukee's Logan Farrington, who fired a shot from outside of the 18 in the 87th minute. Just a minute later, another Milwaukee shot was heading for the net, but was turned away by a Titan defender on the line. Powder had a last shot on net in the 90th minute, with just 47 seconds left, but Milwaukee keeper Nick Chiappa deflected the tough-angled shot out of bounds.
Milwaukee had the edge on shots in the second half, 10-5, and also had the advantage in the game, 17-12. The Panthers also had 10 corner kicks, while the Titans earned seven corner kick opportunities.
Powder had a team-high three shots in the contest to lead the Titans, with Halloran recording two shots. Mendez made two saves in goal and the team had three saves overall.
