Davis, Kuol, Johnson Earn Horizon League Honors

INDIANAPOLIS (2/23/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team had three Titans honored by the Horizon League for their play on the court as the conference released its postseason awards on Tuesday.

Junior Antoine Davis was named First-Team All-Horizon League, while graduate senior Bul Kuol was tabbed to the Third Team. In addition, senior Matt Johnson was named the Horizon League's Sixth Man Of The Year. 

All of the honors were voted on by the league's 12 head coaches.

Davis leads the conference and is third in the nation in scoring at 23.3 points per game - up to 24.5 points in HL games - and also leads the league in 3-point field goals per game (3.45) and free-throw percentage (91.1%). He is second in the league and seventh in the country in total 3-point field goals (69), third in the league in 3-point field goal percentage (35.2%), sixth in assists per game (4.8), 13th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.48) and 15th in field goal percentage (41.2%). 

He has scored in double figures in all 20 games on the year and tops his conference peers with 14, 20-point games as well as a league-best four 30-point outings. Davis netted at least 23 points in 12 of the 16 conference games on the season. He tallied a season-high 35 points - tied for the fifth-highest in the league - at Cleveland State and also posted 30 points in games against Green Bay, Purdue Fort Wayne and at Oakland. 

He is the fifth Titan in school history to earn three All-Horizon League honors (Dwayne Kelley, Rashad Phillips, Brandon Cotton, Ray McCallum) and the second to be selected to the First Team three times (Rashad Phillips). He is also the 18th player in Horizon League history to earn three First Team selections.  

Kuol is 13th in the league in scoring at 15.5 points per game - up to 16.4 points in conference games - and also ranks sixth in 3-point field goals per game (2.4) and 11th in field-goal percentage (45.5%), while posting 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He has scored in double digits in scoring 17 times in his 20 games with four 20-point outings, including a career-high 29 points against Purdue Fort Wayne and 28 against Oakland, and also recorded a double-double with 18 points and a career-best 11 rebounds against Robert Morris.

Johnson averaged 9.2 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists, while shooting 44.4% from the field, 40.8% from three and 94.4% at the free-throw line. On the season, he scored in double digits eight times, grabbed at least five rebounds in eight games and handed out at least three assists in three contests. He also had three 20-point performances including a career-high 24 points against Purdue Fort Wayne as he was a career-best 9-of-14 with six 3-pointers to go with six boards and netted 20 points and a collegiate-best eight boards against Wright State. 

He is the second Titan to win the Sixth Player of the Year joining Eli Holman in 2011-12. 

The Titans - who are the fifth seed in the Progressive Insurance Horizon League Basketball Championship - will host 12th-seeded Robert Morris on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
