Titan Memory Podcast - Tom Villemure

DETROIT (2/21/2021) -- Throughout the 2020-21 season at halftime of the men's basketball games on WLQV 92.7 FM & 1500 AM FaithTalk Detroit, the Voice of the Titans Dan Hasty will chat with a former men's basketball alum about their time in the Motor City.

Villumere was the leading scorer in the state and an All-State basketball player in 1957 at Newberry High, who then spent his first two years of college at Lake Superior State and was a two-time MVP at Lake Superior State. He transferred and helped the Titans reach the NIT in 1960 and 1961. The 59-60 team won 20 games with wins over Purdue, Marquette, Notre Dame, Seton Hall, Xavier, Boston College and played on the first team to reach the postseason in the 1960 NIT game against Villanova. In 1960-61 season, he sank a 20-foot jumper at the buzzer to beat No. 3 Indiana, 81-79, in double overtime. He would go on to became a college coach and was the head coach at Grand Valley State for 24 years and is GVSU's all-time winningest coach, tallying five GLIAC titles and seven second-place finishes as well as three NCAA Division II tournaments and three NAIA national tournaments during his career.
