DETROIT (4/28/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team played in its third-straight home contest Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 19-5 affair with Mid-American Conference leader Robert Morris on from Titan Field.
The Titans fell to 2-5 overall and 2-5 in the Mid-American Conference in the home setback, while RMU improved to 12-2 and 8-0 in MAC play.
Offensively, junior midfielder
Elise Harder led the way with two goals and one assist, while junior midfielder
Taryn McManus added one goal and one assist for the Titans. Harder had four draw controls to lead the team and on the defense side of the ball, senior defender
Sarah Lucas posted team-highs with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
The Titans were out-shot 39-21 in the contest, but did make 12 saves in net with sophomore GK
Hannah Shrader tallying seven saves in the opening half and senior GK
Maddie Johnson turning aside five shots, adding two ground balls in the final 30 minutes of play.
Robert Morris held a 7-1 advantage midway through the first half, before freshman
Cat Kopchia scored off a free-position opportunity as the Titans cut the deficit to 7-2 with 9:46 remaining. After RMU earned a 9-2 lead, Harder scored a woman-up goal as the Titans trailed just 9-3. The Colonials would go on a run to end the half, however, taking a 13-3 lead at the halftime break.
The two teams traded goals early in the second half as the score was 14-4 RMU, but then both team's defenses played well in the next portion of the contest as the Colonials and Titans were held scoreless for the next 11-plus minutes. RMU broke the scoring drought with 15:44 left to open a 5-0 run before Titan sophomore
Marina Butler scored with just seconds left in the contest to end the scoring.
The two teams were even in ground balls (23-23) and just about even in clears with the Titans going 18-for-23 (78.2%). Robert Morris held the edge in draw controls (16-9).
McManus added three ground balls, while senior midfielder
Taylor Cantelon had three draw controls and two ground balls for the Titans. Senior
Kamryn Corraro and junior
Jess Turner each posted two ground balls for the red, white and blue.
It was the first meeting between the two programs since the 2017 season.
