Titans Drop Road Contest at Kent State

KENT, Ohio (5/1/2021) -- Senior attacker Kamryn Corraro had a team-high six points and junior midfielder Taryn McManus tallied a career-best eight draw controls, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team dropped a 20-11 road game with host Kent State on Saturday.

Corraro had a team-best five goals, adding one assist for six points. Corraro had a hat trick in the first half, scoring just before the halftime buzzer as the Titans and Golden Flashes were tied 7-7 after the opening 30 minutes of play. Junior midfielder Elise Harder added three points on two goals and one assist and sophomore attacker Marina Butler tallied two goals for the red, white and blue on offense.

McManus had a career-best eight draw controls and also had a team-best three caused turnovers and shared the team-high with four ground balls. Detroit Mercy (2-6, 2-6 MAC) edged Kent State (5-10, 4-6 MAC) in draw controls in the contest overall, 18-14.

It was a back-and-forth game for much of the first half. Kent State took a 4-0 lead early on its Senior Day, but the Titans then rallied, scoring the next five goals -- all by different goal scorers -- to take a 5-4 lead. Freshman attacker Cat Kopchia opened the run with a free-position goal at 21:56 and then Harder scored off the free-position opportunity just a minute later. Corraro and senior Taylor Cantelon both scored unassisted goals to tie the game up and with 9:49 left in the first half, Corraro found Butler, who fired it past the goalkeeper to give Detroit Mercy a 5-4 lead.

Kent State scored three of the next four goals to take a 7-6 edge late in the opening half, but Corraro scored as the buzzer rang out to tie the score, 7-7, entering halftime.

Neither team scored in the first five minutes of the second half, but off a Claire Conway caused turnover, sophomore Annie Gilbert fed Butler, who scored to cut into the KSU lead, 9-8. Kent State scored the next two goals, but Corraro answered with her fourth goal of the contest as the Titans were down 11-9 with 18:12 left.

The Golden Flashes would score the next three markers, however, to take a 14-9 lead with 12:34 left. Harder ended that run with 9 minutes left, but KSU again would go on a 3-0 run as Kent State took a 17-10 advantage with just 3:38 left on the clock.

Conway shared the team-lead in the game with four ground balls and had two caused turnovers for the Titans. Cantelon had four draw controls and added one goal, while freshman defender Kaileigh Nuessgen posted two ground balls for Detroit Mercy.

The Titans went 15-of-17 on clear attempts (88.2%) and made 10 saves in net, six by freshman GK Hannah Shrader and four by senior Maddie Johnson.

KSU held the shot advantage in the contest, 37-23, but the Titans did put 20 of 23 shots on net (86.9%).
