Titans Topped by Chippewas in 2021 Home Finale

DETROIT (5/3/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team dropped its home finale to in-state foe Central Michigan on Monday afternoon, as the Chippewas earned a 20-7 victory on a rainy and overcast day from Titan Field in Detroit.

Offensively, the Titans were led by senior attacker Kamryn Corraro, who scored three goals for the Titans. Junior midfielder Elise Harder added two goals for the red, white and blue. On the defensive side of the ball, junior defender Claire Conway had three caused turnovers and senior defender Sarah Lucas added three ground balls.

In net, both senior Maddie Johnson (five saves) and Hannah Shrader collected four ground balls for Detroit Mercy (2-7, 2-7 Mid-American Conference). Junior midfielder Taryn McManus added five draw controls to lead the squad and Harder tallied two caused turnovers for the Titans.

The Titans scored the first goal of the game as Conway forced a turnover in the opening 20 seconds and Corraro scored on her own at the other end, just 33 seconds into the contest. CMU answered right back, scoring 30 seconds later and CMU scored two after that to take a 3-1 lead.

Detroit Mercy countered with the next two goals as Harder scored two goals in 1 minute, the first on a free-position opportunity and then after a McManus draw control, junior Jess Turner found Harder for another goal as it was 3-3 with 22 minutes left in the opening half.

The Chippewas scored the next four markers to make it 7-3 before sophomores Marina Butler and Annie Gilbert connecting on a one-timer, with Gilbert firing it home quickly after a pass from Butler into the 8-meter. CMU would go on a run to end the half, however, leading 12-4 at the halftime break.

Corraro scored the first goal of the second half, but the Chippewas built a 19-5 lead midway through the second half. The Titans scored two of the final three goals of the game, holding CMU to just one goal in the final 14 minutes. McManus fired a goal in off the post and Corraro scored with 5:45 remaining to finish off the scoring for the red, white and blue.

Central Michigan held the shot advantage in the contest, 42-16. Both teams had 12 caused turnovers in the contest and CMU held the draw control edge, 21-8.

Freshman defender Kaileigh Nuessgen added two ground balls and senior midfielder Taylor Cantelon posted two draw controls for the Titans in the game.

It was the sixth meeting in women's lacrosse between the Titans and Central Michigan (Detroit Mercy leads series, 4-2).
