INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (5/14/2021) -- Former University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer student-athlete
Garret Weaver (Northville, Mich.) has been selected as the male recipient of the Horizon League Post-Graduate Scholarship Award, it was announced by the league office on Friday.
To be eligible for the scholarship, student-athletes must meet criteria in four distinct categories — academics, athletics, service and leadership. The recipient must have an overall minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent, have competed with distinction as a member of a varsity sport, exhibited quality time working in the community/university in providing service to others, and demonstrated leadership qualities as a student at their institution and as a member of their intercollegiate program.
"Financing my medical education has always been a worry of mine the last several years. Playing for a league (Horizon League) that supports growth and financial aid of their student-athletes after conclusion of their collegiate career means a lot to me, as well speaks volumes about the character and goals of the league. I could not be happier to be selected for this honor, and I appreciate Detroit Mercy and the Horizon League for all they do for their former and current student athletes!"
Weaver earned the Horizon League's annual Cecil N. Coleman Medal of Honor during the 2019-20 school year. The Coleman Medal of Honor is the Horizon League's most prestigious accolade and is presented annually to the top male and female student-athletes who demonstrate outstanding achievement in academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities.
A former standout defender on the soccer pitch, Weaver was the Detroit Mercy Athletic Department's male President's Award winner for 2019-20 and earned Second Team All-Horizon League laurels during his final season in 2019, helping lead the team to seven victories. The Northville, Michigan native was a two-time Horizon League All-Academic Team honoree as a junior and senior (2018, 2019) and as a junior was named a Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team member. Weaver was a Biology major on a Pre-Med track at the University as an undergrad.
Earlier during his season campaign in 2019-20, Weaver was named as one of 30 men's soccer candidates nationally for the Senior Class Award. During his time as a student on campus, Weaver worked at Detroit Mercy's Student Success Center, which provided student-centered academic support services throughout the school year. For two summers, he was part of the General Motors Student Corps, where he mentored high school students in Detroit, along with executing and creating community service projects around the city. He was part of the service fraternity on campus -- Alpha Phi Omega (APO) -- as well as the Pre-Med club. He volunteered at nearby Beaumont Hospital assisting in the Emergency Room.
Weaver is the second Detroit Mercy student-athlete -- and first male student-athlete -- to receive the post-graduate scholarship from the Horizon League after former women's golf student-athlete Sarah Montone received the award in 2017.
