Titans Blank Saginaw Valley State on Sunday

DETROIT (8/29/2021) -- The Titans used some good defense and solid play in net to come up with their first win of the season as the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team blanked Saginaw Valley State, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Titan Field.

The Titans took an early 1-0 lead just 10 minutes into the match as freshman Erica Leinweber was able to intercept a SVSU pass just past midfield and cruised down the field, racing past two Cardinals and beating the keeper for her first collegiate goal.

Leinweber had another good look just seconds after her goal, pushing a shot just wide of the frame.

SVSU outshot the Titans, 11-5, but Detroit Mercy sophomore goalie Marisa Silver posted six saves to keep the Cardinals at bay. Silver made a great leaping stop on a header towards the top of the net in the 77th minute to preserve the 1-0 score. The sophomore keeper turned aside five shots on net in the second half alone.

Leinweber led the Titans with two shots, while senior Julie Ann Piechocki, sophomore Tia Jokic and freshman Sarah Soraghan each added shots on goal for the red, white and blue.

Titan News & Notes
• Silver notched her second career shutout with her other coming in a 0-0 draw with IUPUI last season.
• Leinweber has three points in the past two matches after assisting on Piechocki's goal at Toledo.
• The six saves by Silver also tied her career-high with the sophomore keeper making six saves in a match twice during the 2021 spring season.
• It was the second meeting all-time with Saginaw Valley State, with the Titans winning the only other match in 2006.
