DETROIT (8/30/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy is in mourning following the loss of former gridiron standouts Tony Asher '61 and Ted Karpowicz '62.
Asher entered eternal life on August 24 at the age of 85, while Karpowicz passed away on August 14 at the age of 84.
Both were members of the 1960 team that posted a 7-2 mark and is in the school's Hall of Fame. The seven wins were the most ever for a U-D football team of the post-World War II era. The team was coached by Jim Miller and had victories over Xavier, Cincinnati, Boston College, Dayton, Quantico Marines, Marquette, and Villanova.
A guard from Visitation High School in Detroit, Asher was a part of the Titan program from 1958-1960 that posted a 17-10-1 mark in his time, including 7-2 in 1960, which is in the school's Hall Of Fame. As a senior that season, he was a team captain and All-Catholic All-American and the Catholic Player of the Year as U-D was 29th in the nation in offense averaging 20.1 points per game.
Prior to entering college, he proudly served in the United States Military during the Korean War.
Memorials appreciated to Detroit Mercy School of Law. Obituary and condolences at lynchfuneraldirectors.com.
Karpowicz played from 1959-1961 as a halfback and totaled over 400 yards for the Titans. He would go on to be drafted in the 16th round of the NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings.
He would also serve his country in the United States Navy.
Both Asher and Karpowicz would remain friends and coach flag football years later.
