DETROIT (9/19/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team controlled the tempo for nearly the entire game with Cleveland State in a Sunday matinee, but the Vikings were able to sneak away with a 2-1 victory in overtime from Titan Field.
The Titans (1-8-0, 0-2-0 HL) were able to move the ball well offensively, taking 20 shots in the game, while surrendering just five shots to the Vikings (3-5-1, 2-0-0 HL), while also having an 8-5 advantage on corner kicks.
The game was scoreless with less than three minutes to go when Cleveland State was able to find the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
It looked like that would remain the score, but with just a minute to go, sophomore
Nevada Larson was able to send the ball in the box for senior
Hailey Wentzloff, who was fouled on the play and received a corner kick. She would beat the CSU keeper to knot it at 1-1.
Cleveland State would come back to net the winning goal with just under five minutes on the clock in the first overtime period.
The Titans had a 7-1 advantage on shots in the first half with one on net as freshman
Erica Leinweber's attempt was saved in the 10th minute.
In the second half, Detroit Mercy outshot Cleveland State, 13-3, firing three shots in the first 10 minutes. Wentzloff had a shot that was saved in the 73rd minute and Leinweber was turned away in the 78th.
The Titans will be back in action heading out to Youngstown State on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m.
