YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (9/23/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team battled Youngstown State on the road deep into the first overtime before falling by a 2-1 final on Thursday night.
The match was scoreless until the 60th minute when the Penguins (1-6-3, 1-0-2 HL) snuck one through to jump out in front.
That tally didn't last long, however, as sophomore forward
Erica Toupin netted her first goal of the season to tie it at 1-1 just four minutes later. Senior midfielder
Julie Ann Piechocki assisted on the Toupin goal and finished the night with four shots of her own, three of which were on frame.
The Titans (1-9, 0-3-0 HL) finished with 12 total shots, seven of which found their way on cage. Detroit Mercy also had four corners, including three between the second half and overtime periods.
Detroit Mercy outshot YSU, 6-4, in the first half with two shots in the first five minutes and another that was saved in the 10th minute as Piechocki had a look on net. She would also have two more shots that were turned away in the first.
In the second, junior
Taylor Stanley had a shot that was saved and sophomore
Nevada Larson and freshman
Danica Paesano also had attempts that were stopped.
In the overtime period, the defense was up to the task as the Penguins had two corners and three shots before netting the game-winner in the final seconds.
Titans' goalkeeper sophomore
Marisa Silver was able to keep the red, white and blue in the game with five saves.
Detroit Mercy will now return home to Titan Field on Sunday, Sept. 26, for a match-up with Robert Morris at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
