BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (9/22/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team went on the road, but came up on the wrong end of a 2-0 game at #17 Bowling Green on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference affair.
Detroit Mercy (1-3-2) peppered the Falcons with 12 shots on the day with a pair on net in the first half that were saved.
Bowling Green (6-1-1) scored its first goal in the 28th minute and then added a penalty kick score in the 56th minute of action.
Sophomore
Samory Powder led the offense with four total shots, while seniors
Daniel Iyok and
Ryan Halloran each had a shot on goal. Redshirt freshman
Jonathan Kliewer made five saves on the night to keep the red, white and blue within striking distance.
The Titans fought off a pair of early corner kick opportunities by BGSU in the first six minutes and came back to fire three shots of their own in the following six minutes of action.
Detroit Mercy would then register three more shots in a flurry of action in the 25th and 26th minutes, two of which were blocked and another that sailed high by senior
Kyle Bandyk, but the Falcons then found the back of the net a minute later.
Iyok had a chance for a goal in the 40th minute, but his shot was saved, while Halloran's attempt was stopped right before time expired in the first.
In the second, Kliewer kept BGSU off the scoreboard with a save in the 51st minute, but the Falcons scored off a PK in the 56th. The Titans would have four shots the rest of the way, but could not connect.
Detroit Mercy will be back in action when its visits HL-rival IUPUI on Saturday, Sept. 25, in a 1:00 p.m. start.
