DETROIT (9/29/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team played its first home match of the season on Wednesday afternoon, a 1-1 double-overtime finish against Green Bay.
Detroit Mercy (2-3-3, 1-1-1 HL) put the pressure on from the very beginning, as the Titans had five corner kicks and three shots in the first 30 minutes of action.
The Phoenix (1-5-3, 0-2-1 HL) would net the first goal of the match in the 19th minute on a penalty kick off a foul in the box to take a 1-0 lead that would carry over into the second half.
The Titans would even the score at 1-1 13 minutes into the second half on the first collegiate goal from junior midfielder
Rocco Galati. Redshirt-senior
Daniel Iyok assisted on the goal, his second on the year, sending the ball through on a cross from a tough angle. Galati finished the contest with two of Detroit Mercy's five shots on goal.
In the first overtime period, the Titans fired off three shots while not surrendering a shot to Green Bay.
Detroit Mercy would tally four shots in total between the two overtime periods while also seeing two corner kick opportunities in the second overtime.
Offensively, Detroit Mercy finished the match with 17 shots, one shy from a season high. Their five shots on goal are tied for second-most in a match this season, and the second straight game with five shots on goal, converting three of them over that span.
Redshirt-freshman
Jonathan Kliewer finished with one save on the afternoon. The Phoenix were only able to put two shots on goal due to the fantastic play of the Titans' defense, led by redshirt-senior
Kyle Bandyk and senior
Ryan Halloran.
The red, white, and blue will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 2, from Titan Field as they host Oakland at 7:00 p.m. for Homecoming and a Metro Series showdown on ESPN+.
