Titans Fall At Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wisc. (1/20/2022) -- Senior Antoine Davis netted a game-high 25 points to lead three Titans in double figures, but Green Bay was able to come up with some timely baskets down the stretch as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team was downed, 70-63, on Thursday night at the Resch Center. 

Davis also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior Madut Akec had 16 points - 12 in the second half - on 7-of-9 shooting with four rebounds, while junior Noah Waterman netted 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and 2-of-3 from three with seven rebounds and two blocks. 

Detroit Mercy (5-10, 3-3 HL) trailed early as Green Bay (4-13, 3-5 HL) was able to build as high as a 10-point lead in the first half, 31-21, and took a 38-32 advantage at the break. 

The Titans began to chip away going on a 13-4 run to take the lead early in the second half. Akec scored six-straight points for the Titans at one point and then Davis had the next seven with his 3-pointer lifting the team to a 48-47 lead and a steal and a layup on the next possession making it 50-47 with 11:02 left.

The teams traded the lead over the next four minutes, but with the red, white and blue ahead 54-51 with 7:44 left, Green Bay jumped back in front and the Titans were not able to reclaim the lead.

Senior Willy Isiani had six points and four rebounds and graduate senior Kevin McAdoo added four points.

The Titans shot 48.1% from the field with eight 3-pointers and only had nine turnovers.

Detroit Mercy will be back in action on Saturday as the squad visits Milwaukee in a 3:00 p.m. tip. 

First Half:
  • Akec had a three and another three by Isiani tied it at 8-8 early on
  • A triple by Davis cut the Green Bay lead to 15-11 after a Phoenix 7-0 run
  • The Titans would get within one, 19-18 at 12:11, with seven-straight points as Waterman had a layup and three and Davis nailed a jumper 
  • Isiani connected on another from distance to make it a 26-21 game with 9:19 to go
  • Junior Jeramy Shaw had two free throws and a jumper from Davis cut the deficit to 31-25 with 4:03 left and then Davis had a free throw to make it a five-point game
  • Davis got to double figures with a jumper at 1:58 and then a driving layup from McAdoo had the Titans trailing 34-30 with 1:10 left
  • Green Bay had an offensive putback at the buzzer for a 38-32 game at the break

Second Half:
  • A 3-pointer by Akec had the Titans within one possession, 40-37, just a minute in
  • Akec would later have back-to-baskets and pulled the team within 45-41 with 15 minutes remaining
  • Detroit Mercy would then go on a 9-0 run to take a 50-47 advantage with 10:37 on the clock
  • Akec started the spurt with a layup and then Davis hit a jumper to make it 47-45
  • Off a timeout, Davis buried a three to give the Titans a lead, and then he would steal the ball and get to the rim for a score and a 50-47 lead at 11:02 as the Phoenix went scoreless for five minutes
  • Davis would hit another jumper to put the Titans in front again, 52-51, with just over eight minutes left and Akec added to that with a dunk off a timeout
  • A quick pass from Waterman to Akec led to a layup and a 56-55 lead with 6:25 left
  • McAdoo split a pair of defenders and got inside for an easy basket and the Titans were down by just two, 62-60, with 3:12 remaining
  • Waterman knocked in a triple to make it a one-possession game, 66-63, with 53 seconds on the clock

Game Notes:
  • Detroit Mercy has dropped 15 of the last 19 to Green Bay, nine in a row at the Resch Center as the Phoenix lead the all-time series, 34-29
  • The three free throws were tied for a season-low with the 3-of-4 effort at Northwestern earlier in the season
  • Davis came into the game averaging 25.5 points in six career games against Green Bay
  • Davis came into the game tied for first in the country in scoring at 23.9 ppg., with Iowa's Keegan Murray.
  • Davis now has 68 career 20-point games in 97 collegiate games and has also scored in double figures in all 97 games, trailing only Keydren Clark (St. Peters, 2003-06) for fifth in NCAA history in that category
  • Akec has also scored in double figures in 13 games this season
  • Waterman has been in double figures in three of the last four games
  • Waterman's career-high in rebounds is eight at Oakland last season
