DETROIT (1/28/2022) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team has announced a few schedule changes that impact the next couple of days.
The Titans have added a home game against the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Monday, Jan. 31, at 7:00 p.m. in Calihan Hall.
Fans with tickets to the IUPUI game can use those for Monday's contest. At the game, the Titans will honor this year's Titan Reggie Spirit Of Detroit Mercy Award winner at halftime.
The upcoming game on Saturday, Jan. 29, against IUPUI has been canceled and deemed a no-contest with the Horizon League.
The announcement followed positive COVID-19 tests within IUPUI's tier I individuals.
Horizon League policy, vetted by multiple membership groups and approved by the Horizon League Council, states that contests that are canceled due to COVID-19 are to be considered forfeits unless deemed a no contest by the Commissioner. League policy authorizes the Commissioner to deem a cancellation a no-contest when the involved institution can demonstrate that extraordinary circumstances led to the cancellation. Given the surge in positive cases due to the Omicron variant, the Council agreed that a high volume of breakthrough cases among vaccinated individuals is considered extraordinary.
IUPUI sought to deem missed competition on January 29 a no contest since it is unable to field a team due to breakthrough cases among vaccinated student-athletes. Commissioner Julie Roe Lach granted the requested relief noting that it satisfied the extraordinary standard.
If needed, additional updates to the schedule will be announced at a later date.
