DETROIT (10/6/22) - The battle for first place in the #HLWSOC standings did not disappoint as graduate student
Hailey Wentzloff and juniors
Erica Toupin and
Olivia Zulewski each scored goals as Detroit Mercy held off Wright State for an epic 3-2 win to move into first place in the league standings and remain a perfect 5-0-1 at Titan Field this season.
Freshman
Abbey Lodato added her team-best fifth assist of Toupin's first goal of the season. Junior
Jazmine Scott picked up her sixth win on the year.
In the 15th minute, Wentzloff gave Detroit Mercy (4-6-1, 4-2 HL) a 1-0 lead as she scored her first goal of the season off a penalty kick.
The Titans were not done as Lodato sent in a long cross towards the left upper 90. Wright State (6-5-2, 3-1-2 HL) keeper Jessika Seward was able to extend her arm to make the save but deflected the ball right to Toupin who was able to redirect the ball into the net for a 2-0 lead in the 24th minute.
WSU got on the board in the 60th minute cutting the deficit to 2-1. However, Detroit Mercy got a huge break in the 72nd minute as Seward fired a clear attempt that hit Zulewski square in the chest. The ball then deflected off her chest backwards into the back of the net giving Zulewski her first career goal and a 3-1 Titan advantage.
The Raiders kept on swinging as they added their second goal just five minutes later in the 77th minute to once again pull within a goal at 3-2.
Scott and the backline stood tall and kept Wright State at bay down the stretch to hold on for the Titans' sixth win of the season.
Detroit Mercy hits the road for a crucial league match at IUPUI on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.
