Titans Heist Gold From 49'ers For Career Coaching Win #400 For Davis In Wednesday Matinee

DETROIT (11/23/2022) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team started the game on a 12-0 run and never looked back as the Titans routed the Charlotte 49'ers, 70-49, on Wednesday afternoon in Calihan Hall.

The win was the 400th in the career of head coach Mike Davis.

Graduate senior Antoine Davis led the way with a game-high 26 points, hitting six more 3-pointers, along with recording four rebounds and four assists. He now has 2,882 points to move to 15th in NCAA history as well as 453 career 3-pointers, fifth in the NCAA record book.

Senior Jordan Phillips posted 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while graduate senior TJ Moss finished with a season-high nine points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Detroit Mercy (3-3) led from start to finish, scoring the first 12 points as graduate senior Damezi Anderson nailed a three, and then Davis buried three-straight from behind the arc for the 12-0 lead just three minutes into play.

The defense would hold Charlotte (4-2) to single digits through the first nine minutes of play. The red, white and blue would push the lead back to double figures on a 7-0 spurt as Moss got inside for a bucket and then graduate senior A.J. Oliver hit a three and another field goal to make it 22-11 at the 6:34 mark. A dunk by graduate senior Buay Koka increased the advantage to 14, 27-13, and then a three from Davis had the squad up by 15, 30-15, before entering the half up 35-22.

In the second half, the 49'ers cut the lead down to six, 37-31, but Phillips then went inside for two and, after a Charlotte turnover, would hit from distance to make it a 42-31 score with 14:01 left. They would trim it to under 10 again at 42-33, but Davis would again extend it to double digits on a 3-pointer and a jumper.

Later on, an 8-0 run by the Titans had the team up by 20, 57-37, and eventually, a jumper from Moss gave Detroit Mercy its biggest lead of the day in 64-42 with 3:28 left and the red, white and blue cruised the rest of the way.

The Titans shot over 50.0% for the second-straight game going 26-of-50 overall and 10-of-24 from deep. The defense also held Charlotte to 36.4% shooting with 13 turnovers and outrebounded the 49'ers, 32-20.

Detroit Mercy will now head out west as the Titans visit PAC-12 country with a game at Washington State on Friday. The contest will tip off at 4:00 p.m. (EST).
