McNeal and Murua Post Career-Highs as Detroit Mercy drops #HLWBB Game to Milwaukee

McNeal scores 18 points followed by 16 points from Murua

DETROIT (2/10/22) - Junior Imani McNeal had a breakout game pouring in a career-high 18 points going 3-for-4 from 3-point range on 7-for-13 shooting with three rebounds and two assists while matching a career-best four steals to lead Detroit Mercy. Sophomore Irene Murua also added a career-best 16 points shooting a blistering 8-for-10 from the field with four rebounds, two assists and two steals as the Titans fell 71-55 to visiting Milwaukee on Thursday night. Entering tonight's game, McNeal was only averaging 4.4 ppg and was held scoreless over the last three games.   

Graduate student Daija Moses added five points with a team-high seven rebounds while freshman Akyia Baker also chipped in with five points. Senior Monquie Pruitt and sophomore Lucia Fleta Robles each added four points while graduate student Janna Lewis completed the scoring for Detroit Mercy (0-22, 0-15 HL) with three points.

For the game, Milwaukee (10-13, 9-7 HL) held a 15-3 second chance points advantage and made the most of their trips to the charity strip going 13-for-14 (92.9%) while the Titans only hit 4-of-13 (38.5%) which proved to be the difference.

Both teams came out of the gate with hot shooting from the floor as Detroit Mercy shot 8-for-14 (57.1%) while Milwaukee hit 10-for-17 (58.8%) to take a 23-17 at the end of the first quarter. McNeal scored the Titans' last four points to trail 23-17.

Detroit Mercy moved their run to 8-3 to open the second quarter pulling within five points at 26-21. However, the Panthers responded with a quick 6-2 spurt extending their lead to nine points at 32-23 and then increased their run to 14-4 while outscoing the Titans 17-8 in the frame for a15 point advantage at the half, 40-25. 

Fleta Robles hit her only 3-pointer of the game as the Titans responded, outscoring the Panthers 18-15 in the third quarter but still trailed 55-43 heading into the fourth quarter.

Trailing 62-48 in the fourth, Detroit Mercy went on a 7-4 spurt to pull within 11 points at 66-55 but that is as close as the Titans would get as Milwaukee closed out the game snapping a two-game skid.

The Titans host Green Bay on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m.
