ANN ARBOR, Mich. (2/12/2022) -- Redshirt freshman
Jakob Hemme tied a school record with 28 saves as he was under attack all game long as Michigan defeated the University of Detroit Mercy men' lacrosse team, 21-5, on Saturday afternoon.
Hemme - who also had four ground balls - tied Jason Weber's mark that he had against Mercer in 2015.

Aidan Bishop notched his first collegiate points with a goal and an assist. Seniors
Ryan Figueiras and
Mitch Durst also scored, the first of Durst's career.

Paul Manuszak picked up a team-high six ground balls and sophomore
Connor Baratta won 11 faceoffs and had three ground balls.
The Titans (0-2) saw #20/RV Michigan (2-0) race out to a 4-0 lead before Erskine got the team on the board with 6:55 left in the first, a period that saw Hemme make seven saves.
Hemme added seven more in the second and Erskine tallied his second marker with 3:52 to go as the Titans trailed at the break, 11-2.
Figueiras beat the keeper with 48 seconds left in the third as Hemme had 20 total saves after three. In the fourth, Manuszak picked up a ground ball off a faceoff and threw it behind two defenders, finding Bishop who beat the goalie with 12:06 left. Bishop was then running the offense and found Durst, who ran by his defender and fired one in at the 11:28 mark.
Hemme did all he could making six saves after that and then registering his program-tying mark with just under two minutes to play.
Detroit Mercy will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 19, when the red, white and blue travel to another nationally-ranked team in the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
First Period:
- Hemme made four saves early, but Michigan took a 4-0 lead about seven minutes in
- Off a faceoff win, Edell found Erskine and he beat the goalie on the right side at 6:55 mark
- Hemme made another save at 6:01 and Wooldridge was able to cause a turnover with 3:39 left to keep Michigan off the scoreboard
- Heme made two more saves, including one as the time was winding down, for seven saves in the first and Michigan led 6-1
Second Period:
- Hemme made another stop and the Titans had dome bad luck Bishop's shot hitting the post two minutes in
- Hemme made two more saves and the Titans had two shots saved and another attempt that was blocked
- The Titans killed off a 30-second penalty and after another Heme save, Erskine blew by the defense and fired one in for his second marker with 3:52 remaining
- Hemme made two saves inside of two minutes for 14 first-half stops
Third Period:
- Titans won the opening faceoff but has a shot blocked
- Manuszak had a shot wide and Bishop had one blocked with 9:37 remaining
- Hemme made his 17th save with 9:15 left
- Gellatly's shot was saved with 5:33 on the clock
- Figueiras found the back of the net with 48 ticks left
- Hemme recorded his 20th save with a stop as the attackman was right in front of him with 10 seconds to go
Fourth Period:
- Hemme made two more saves in the first two minutes to up his total to 22
- Off a faceoff win, Manuszak picked up the ground ball and fed Bishop, who scored his first collegiate goal with 12:06 on the clock
- Just 30 seconds later, Bishop set up Durst, who notched his first collegiate goal with 11:28 remaining
- Hemme made four more saves in the next seven minutes to move his total to 27
- With 1:59 left, Hemme made his record-tying 28th stop of the game
Game Notes:
- This is the fourth career meeting between the two schools and the first since 2017 with Michigan now holding a 4-1 advantage, 2-0 in Ann Arbor
- Detroit Mercy is now 2-14 all-time against current members of the Big Ten with wins over Michigan (2012) and Ohio State (2015)
- Jason Weber made 28 saves against Mercer on March 4, 2015
- Manuszak now has 168 career ground balls, passing A.J. Levell and Jason Weber and now tied for fourth in school history with Jamie Hebden (2010-13)
- Erskine now has 113 career points and 74 goals, two shy of fourth place
