Cat Kopchia tied her career-high with four goals and senior
Elise Harder and junior
Annie Gilbert added a pair as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team fell to Marquette, 22-9, on Friday afternoon indoors at UWM Sports Complex.
Kopchia also had an assist for a season-high five points and Harder registered three draw controls. Senior
Taryn McManus had a goal and an assist along with two caused turnovers and senior
Taylor Cantelon recorded a team-high four draw controls.
Graduate senior
Maddie Johnson started in net and made five saves, picking up a team-best six ground balls and junior
Hannah Shrader tallied three stops.
The Titans (0-3, 0-1 MAC) tied the game early on at 1-1 thanks to a goal by Harder, but Marquette (2-3) scored five in a row to take the lead. Detroit Mercy made a late rally at the end of the second period to go into the break down 15-7, but another Golden Eagles run was too much to overcome.
The Titans nearly won the battle of ground balls, 18-15, and were 2-for-3 in free position shots.
The red, white and blue now will get ready for MAC-rival Central Michigan, who come to town on Wednesday, March 2. A game time and location is still to be determined.
First Period:
- Johnson had an early save
- Harder tied it at 1-1 at the 12-minute mark off a pass from McManus
- Marquette scored five in a row to make it 6-1 before Kopchia found Harder for a goal with 1:40 remaining
- Harder then beat the keeper with the buzzer sounding at the end of the period to cut it to 7-3
Second Period:
- The Golden Eagles scored five straight to jump out in front, 12-3, with under 10 minutes on the clock
- Kopchia ended that with a goal at the 8:10 mark
- Johnson made four saves in the second and Harder notched a goal with 4:21 left to make it 13-5
- Kopchia scored on a free position a minute later for a 13-6 game
- McManus then caused a turnover and Cantelon got the ball and found McManus for a goal with just 14 seconds left and it was 15-7 at the break
Third Period:
- Off a draw control win by Cantelon, Kopchia got free for a goal with 13:02 on the clock and she added her fourth of the contest at the 10:24 mark to make it 16-9
- Shrader made a save at 8:06 and added two more down the stretch
Fourth Period:
- The Titans had a few shots early but did not score
- Marquette scored three goals in the period
Game Notes:
- Marquette is now 7-0 all-time in the series and 4-0 on the road
- Johnson's previous high in ground balls was three against Arizona State in 2020
- Kopchia had four goals at Youngstown State and versus Kent State last season, while her career-best in points is six against the Golden Flashes
