DAYTON, Ohio. (10-21-23) - It was better late than never as sophomore
Guershom Sylvain converted a penalty kick game-winning goal with just five seconds remaining in the game lifting Detroit Mercy to an important 2-1 #HLMOSC win at Wright State on Saturday night at Alumni Field. Graduate student
Matthew Andres also scored his first goal of the season just two minutes into the match.
The game looked like it was going to be a 1-1 draw but WSU (3-7-4, 2-4-1 HL) was called for a handball inside the box with just five ticks left. Sylvain calmly stepped up and placed a shot into the back of the net past WSU goalkeeper Alessandro Malterer giving the Titans (4-7-3, 3-2-2 HL) their second league road win of the season.
"I am super proud of the fight and resiliency the group showed after they evened up the score, " said Head Coach
Nate Kopunek. "The game went all the way to the wire but they never put their heads down and earned the important road win in conference play. We will now rest up, dive into game film, and improve on certain areas as we turn our attention to the next game at Penn State."
The game started with offensive fireworks as UDM wasted little time getting on the board just two minutes into the game. A long ball was sent into the top of the box where freshman
Josh Copeland tried to get through two defenders. He lost the ball and it deflected off another WSU defender into space where Andres came running up and delivered a strike past Malterer to the low right side giving the Titans a 1-0 lead.
However, the Raiders responded quickly in the fifth minute with the equalizer tying the game at 1-1.
UDM travels to Penn State for a non-conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m.
