No. 4 Detroit Mercy Opens #HLMSOC Championship Quarterfinals Against No. 5 Purdue Fort Wayne

Titans and Mastodons kick off quarterfinal action on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. on ESPN+

DETROIT (11/4/22) – The No. 4 seed Detroit Mercy men's soccer team opens the 2023 #HLMSOC Championships quarterfinal round with a home match against No. 6 seed Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live from Titan Field on ESPN+ with Steven MacDonald on the call.
 
What is at stake:
If Detroit Mercy wins, they will advance to the semifinal round for a Metro Series rematch at No. 1 seed Oakland.
 
A Look at the Competition:
PFW earned the No. 5 seed going 3-3-2 in league play totaling 11 points with a 6-5-3 overall record.
 
Proving Them Wrong:
With the win over RMU, Detroit Mercy secured a spot in the 2023 #HLMSOC Championships. The Titans were picked to finish last in the 2023 Under Armour Horizon League Men's Soccer Preseason Poll announced by the league office and voted on by the league's head coaches.
 
The Road to No. 4 Seed:
Detroit Mercy opened league play with a setback to Green Bay followed by back-to-back wins over CSU and NKU and draw against IUPUI. The Titans then fell at Milwaukee followed by a draw vs PFW and last second win at WSU. UDM closed out with a win over RMU to clinch a spot in the championships followed by a loss at Oakland to finish with 14 points.
 
2019 Snowy Throwback:
The last time Detroit Mercy hosted a #HLMSOC quarterfinal game was during the 2019 season where the No. 3 seed Titans fell 2-0 to the No. 6 seed Milwaukee in the infamous snow game at Titan Field.
 
Tews and Pierson Named to #HLMSOC All-Freshman Team:
Detroit Mercy men's soccer goalkeeper Quinn Tews and midfielder/defender Drew Pierson were named to the #HLMSOC All-Freshman as voted on the by league's head coaches and announced by the league office on Friday. Tews and Pierson are the second consecutive student-athletes to garner All-Freshman Team honors as Guershom Sylvain was named to the 2022 team.
 
Tews the Recuse:
• Tews is a two-time Under Armour® #HLMSOC Defensive Player of the Week recipient
• Posted a 5-6-3 record leading the team in saves (51, 7th-HL), shutouts (2, 5th-HL), goals against average (1.66, 5th-HL) and saves per game (3.64, 5th-HL).
• Was outstanding in goal making a career-high eight saves leading the Titans to a 3-1 win over RMU to clinch a spot in the #HLMSOC Championships earning his second HL Defensive Player of the Week award.
• Picked up his fourth win at WSU with three saves
• Earned his first HL Defensive Player of the Week award after picking up his second and third consecutive win in goal helping the Titans to a 2-0 mark for the week. He made three saves while holding the opponent off the board in the second half for the second consecutive game in a 2-1 win over Eastern Illinois (9/19). Tews followed that performance posting his first career shutout and third career win making five saves helping UDM to an important 1-0 #HLMSOC road win over Northern Kentucky while not allowing a goal in 160.99 total minutes.
• Picked up his first career win in goal making three saves while keeping CSU off the board in the second half en route to the Titans' first #HLWSOC win of the season.
 
Freshman Phenom:
• Pierson ranks second on the team in points (6) scoring his second goal in 1-1 draw against PFW (10/14)
• Posted his first career goal in 3-2 win against CSU (9/16).
• Added his first career assist at St. Mary's (8/24) and second helper in 2-1 win over EIU (9/19).
 
PFW Season Rewind:
Oct. 14 – Detroit Mercy 1 vs Purdue Fort Wayne 1:
Freshman Drew Pierson came up clutch scoring a second-half equalizer propelling Detroit Mercy to a 1-1 draw against Purdue Fort Wayne in #HLMSOC action on at Titan Field. Sophomore Quinn Tews made four saves to preserve the tie for the Titans.
 
In the 73rd minute of the second half, senior Saeid Jannoun made an aggressive move inside the box and drew a foul resulting in a penalty kick. Pierson set up and struck the penalty kick which PFW goalkeeper Danny Salazer made the save. However, the rebound came right back to Pierson who sprinted in and put the rebound home for his second goal of the season tying the game at 1-1.
 
Last Time Out:
Nov. 1 – Detroit Mercy 0 at Oakland 2:
Sophomore Tim Allos recorded three shots with two on goal while Sophomore Guershom Sylvain also added a shot on goal as Detroit Mercy suffered a 2-0 Metro Series setback at arch-rival Oakland on Wednesday afternoon at the Oakland Soccer Field. Sophomore Quinn Tews made five saves in goal.
 
Diac, Myftari and McCarthy Earn #HLMSOC All-Academic Honors:
Detroit Mercy men's soccer team captain Alex Diac and Andri Myftari were named to the #HLMSOC All-Academic Team while team captain Casey McCarthy earned Honorable Mention honors as voted on by each member institution's Faculty Athletics Representative and announced by the league office.
 
• Diac, a junior from Wixom, Mich., holds a 3.95 GPA in the Five-Year Master of Business Administration program and is a Horizon League Honor Roll selection and three-time Detroit Mercy Athletic Director Honor Roll selection.
• Named Team Captain seeing action in 15 games with 13 starts.
• Ranks fourth on the team in points (3)
• Posted first career assist in 2-1 win against Eastern Illinois (9/19) and first career goal off a penalty kick at San Francisco (8/27).
 
• Myftari, a junior from Troy, Mich., holds a 3.94 GPA in Business Administration/Finance and is a Horizon League Honor Roll selection and two-time Detroit Mercy Athletic Director Honor Roll selection.
• Saw action in 14 games with eight starts.
• Scored first career goal off a penalty kick in 2-2 draw vs IUPUI (9/30) and added his first career assist in 3-2 win over CSU (9/16) from his defensive midfield position.

Detroit Mercy Sweeps Under Armour® #HLMSOC Player of the Week Awards:
It was a was a clean sweep for the Detroit Mercy men's soccer team as sophomore goalkeeper Quinn Tews was named Under Armour® Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and sophomore midfielder/defender John Nino was named Under Armour® Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week announced by the league office.
 
Nino, a native of Northville, Mich., posted three points with a goal and assist against Robert Morris. He scored his first goal of the season and recorded his first career assist on the game-winning goal to lead Detroit Mercy to a 3-1 come-from-behind win over RMU to clinch a spot in the 2023 #HLMSOC Championships.
 
Tews, a native of Plymouth, Mich., was outstanding in goal making a career-high eight saves in UDM's 3-1 over RMU. After allowing a goal in the 16th minute, Tews shutout the Colonials the rest of the match setting the stage for the Titans come-from-behind win over the Colonials.
 
All Day Allos:
• Sophomore Tim Allos leads the team in points (7) and is tied for the team-lead in goals (3) as a spark coming off the bench.
• He scored his team-best third goal of the season against RMU (10/28)
• Earlier this season, he recorded a point in three consecutive games.
• Allos recorded his first career assist on the game-winner vs EIU (9/19).
• He then picked the perfect time to score his first goal of the season as his second-half game-winner propelled Detroit Mercy to a big 1-0 #HLMSOC road win over NKU (9/23).
• In the next game, Allos scored for the second consecutive game in the Titans' 2-2 draw against IUPUI (9/30).
 
Sensational Sylvain:
• Sophomore Guershom Sylvain is tired for the team lead in goals (3)
• He posted his third goal of the season with the game-winner in the Titans 3-1 win over RMU (10/28).
• Scored his first goal of the season and third of his career vs CSU and his second goal at Wright State (10/21).
 
On the Board:
• Nino posted three points with a goal and assist against RMU. He scored his first goal of the season and recorded his first career assist on the game-winning goal to lead Detroit Mercy to a 3-1 come-from-behind win over RMU to clinch a spot in the 2023 #HLMSOC Championships.
• Sophomore Mateo Phillips recorded his first career assist against RMU.
• Senior Saeid Jannoun added his second assist of the season against RMU. He posted his first goal of the season at St. Mary's (8/24) and assisted on the game-winner at NKU.
• Graduate student Matthew Andres also scored his first goal of the season just two minutes into the match at Wright State (10/21).
• Junior Andri Myftari scored his first career goal off a penalty kick giving Detroit Mercy a 2-1 lead late in the second half vs IUPUI. He also added his first career assist against CSU (9/16).
• Junior Alex Diac posted his first career assist against EIU (9/19) and first career goal off a penalty kick at San Francisco (8/27).
 
Freshman Firsts:
• The tandem of Josh Copeland and Diego Zermeno added their first career assists on Sylvain's goal against CSU (9/16).
• Copeland also posted his first career goal against EIU.
 
Quick Strikes:
In the two home wins over CSU and EIU and the most recent road win at Wight State, the Titans wasted little time getting on the board as they got their first tally just 1:19 minutes into the game vs the Vikings followed by a goal at the 2:01 mark against the Panthers. UDM scored their first goal against the Raiders at the 2:40 mark.
 
Tews Named Under Armour® #HLMSOC Defensive Player of the Week:
Sophomore goalkeeper Quinn Tews was named Under Armour® Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week announced by the league office on Monday.
 
Tews, a native of Plymouth, Mich., picked up his second and third consecutive win in goal helping the Titans to a 2-0 mark for the week. He made three saves while holding the opponent off the board in the second half for the second consecutive game in a 2-1 win over Eastern Illinois. Tews followed that performance posting his first career shutout making a season second-best five saves helping UDM to an important 1-0 #HLMSOC road win over Northern Kentucky. Over the past two games, Tews has not allowed a goal in 160.99 total minutes.
 
McCarthy Comes Up Double-Clutch with Back-to-Back Game-Winners:
• He picked the perfect time to score his first career goal and game-winner in the Titans' 3-2 win over CSU. In the 38th minute, the Titans cashed in off a free-kick opportunity as a long ball was sent into the box that was headed back by a CSU defender which went directly to McCarthy through traffic. He then fired a rocket from just outside the box beating Yerian to the right side giving UDM the lead for good.
• McCarthy came up clutch once again scoring the game-winning goal as Detroit Mercy took out Eastern Illinois. In the 69th minute of the second half, senior Luke Winters tossed a long throw-in into the box that two EIU defenders failed to clear. Allos snuck in and hit a shot off the crossbar that deflected right to McCarthy who fired a shot off a volley into the left side of the net giving the Titans a 2-1 lead and eventual second consecutive win.
 
Senior Day Salute:
Prior to the match against RMU, the men's soccer team honored seniors Matthew Andres, Saeid Jannoun, Nick Lulaj, David Martin, and Gabriel Parra for their hard work and dedication to the program.
 
Solid Run:
With the 3-2 win over CSU (9/16) until the scoreless draw against BGSU (10/3), the Titans posted a five-game unbeaten streak for first time since the 2017 season.
 
Spradlin III Gets the Call:
Junior Robby Spradlin III saw his first career action at Marquette (9/1). He then got the call making his first career start in goal recording five saves while facing 15 total shots at No. 20 Notre Dame followed by his second consecutive start against Green Bay (Sept. 9).
 
A Long Time Coming:
Detroit Mercy finished the 2022 season with a with a five-game road swing and opened the 2023 campaign with a four-game road stretch. 332 days passed since the Titans' last home match on Oct. 12, 2022 vs Purdue Fort Wayne and the match against Green Bay on Sept. 9, 2023.
 
Road Warriors Racking up the Miles:
With the four consecutive road games at St. Mary's, San Francisco, Marquette and Notre Dame to open the 2023 season, the Titans have traveled a round trip total of 5,985 miles from Detroit, Mich.

Season Rewind:
Oct. 28 – Detroit Mercy 3 vs Robert Morris 1:
Sophomore John Nino posted his first goal of the season and recorded his first career assist on sophomore Guershom Sylvain's game-winning goal as Detroit Mercy rallied for a 3-1 come-from-behind win over Robert Morris on Senior Day at Titan Field on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Titans clinched a spot in the 2023 #HLMSOC Championships. Sophomore Quinn Tews was outstanding in goal making a career-high eight saves.
 
Sophomore Tim Allos also scored his team-best third goal of the season off the first career assist from sophomore Mateo Phillips while senior Saeid Jannoun added his second helper of the season.
 
Oct. 25 – Detroit Mercy 0 at Penn State 3:
Freshmen Josh Copeland and Drew Pierson along with junior Baldeep Gill each recorded a shot on goal as Detroit Mercy dropped a 3-0 non-conference match at Penn State on Wednesday night at Jeffery Field.
 
Oct. 21 – Detroit Mercy 2 at Wright State 1:
It was better late than never as sophomore Guershom Sylvain converted a penalty kick game-winning goal with just five seconds remaining in the game lifting Detroit Mercy to an important 2-1 #HLMOSC win at Wright State on Saturday night at Alumni Field. Graduate student Matthew Andres also scored his first goal of the season just two minutes into the match.
 
The game looked like it was going to be a 1-1 draw but WSU (3-7-4, 2-4-1 HL) was called for a handball inside the box with just five ticks left. Sylvain calmly stepped up and placed a shot into the back of the net past WSU goalkeeper Alessandro Malterer giving the Titans (4-7-3, 3-2-2 HL) their second league road win of the season.
 
Oct. 14 – Detroit Mercy 1 vs Purdue Fort Wayne 1:
Freshman Drew Pierson came up clutch scoring a second-half equalizer propelling Detroit Mercy to a 1-1 draw against Purdue Fort Wayne in #HLMSOC action on at Titan Field. Sophomore Quinn Tews made four saves to preserve the tie for the Titans.

Junior Andri Myftari recorded two shots with one on goal as Detroit Mercy saw its five-match unbeaten streak come to an end with a 1-0 setback at Milwaukee in #HLMSOC action.
 
The Titans posted seven total shots with sophomores Guershom Sylvain and John Nino and freshman Josh Copeland each recording a shot on goal. Sophomore Quinn Tews made for total saves and didn't allow a goal in the first half before Milwaukee posted the game-winner in the 55th minute.
 
Oct. 3 – Detroit Mercy 0 vs Bowling Green 0:
Sophomore Quinn Tews posted his second shutout of the season making three saves as Detroit Mercy played visiting Bowling Green to a 0-0 draw in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Titan Field. Detroit Mercy's (3-6-2) back line stood tall as they turned aside all six BGSU (5-3-3) corner kick set pieces.
 
Sept. 30 – Detroit Mercy 2 vs IUPUI 2:
For the second consecutive game, sophomore Tim Allos scored a goal while junior Andri Myftari scored his first career goal off a penalty kick giving Detroit Mercy a 2-1 lead late in the second half.  However, IUPUI scored a goal in the 89th minute off a free kick allowing the Jaguars to escape Titan Field with a 2-2 draw in #HLMSOC action on Homecoming Saturday afternoon.
 
Sept. 23 – Detroit Mercy 1 at Northern Kentucky 0:
Sophomore Tim Allos picked the perfect time to score his first goal of the season as his second-half game-winner off a feed from senior Saeid Jannoun propelled Detroit Mercy to a big 1-0 #HLMSOC road win over Northern Kentucky on at the NKU Soccer Stadium giving the Titans their third consecutive win.
 
Sept. 19 – Detroit Mercy 2 vs Eastern Illinois 1:
For the second consecutive game, sophomore captain Casey McCarthy came up clutch scoring the game-winning goal as Detroit Mercy took out Eastern Illinois, 2-1, in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Titan Field. Freshman Josh Copeland posted his first career goal off the first career assist from junior Alex Diac while sophomore Tim Allos also recorded his first career assist on McCarthy's game-winner. Freshman Drew Pierson added his second helper on the season.
 
Sept. 16 – Detroit Mercy 3 vs Cleveland State 2:
Head Coach Nate Kopunek picked up his first career win as Detroit Mercy knocked off defending #HLMSOC champion Cleveland State, 3-2, behind the first career goal and game-winner by sophomore captain Casey McCarthy. Freshman Drew Pierson also scored his first career goal while sophomore Guershom Sylvain added his first goal of the season and third of his career.
 
Sophomore Quinn Tews picked up his first career win in goal making three saves while keeping CSU (1-5-1, 0-2 HL) off the board in the second half. The freshmen tandem Josh Copeland and Diego Zermeno added their first career assists on Sylvain's goal.
 
Sept. 9 – Detroit Mercy 0 vs Green Bay 2:
Freshman Drew Pierson posted a shot on goal while sophomore Guershom Sylvain added two shots as Detroit Mercy fell 2-0 to Green Bay in the #HLMSOC home opener at Titan Field.  
 
The Titans (0-5, 0-1HL) almost got on board early in the game in the 10th minute as Pierson got the ball inside the 18-yard and fired a shot to the low left side forcing Green Bay (3-1-1, 1-0 HL) goalkeeper Tobias Jahn to make a diving save.
 
Sept. 5 – Detroit Mercy 0 at No. 20 Notre Dame 1:
Junior Robby Spradlin III made his first career start in goal making five saves while facing 15 total shots as Detroit Mercy battled No. 20 Notre Dame for the entire match in a 1-0 setback on Tuesday at Alumni Field.
 
After the Fighting Irish (3-0-1) took a 1-0 lead just 18 minutes into the match, Spradlin III and the young back line consisting of sophomores Casey McCarthy and John Nino and freshmen Drew Pierson and Joey Iaquaniello held ND scoreless in the second half.
 
Sept. 1 – Detroit Mercy 0 at Marquette 6:
Sophomore Guershom Sylvain posted four shots with two on goal while freshman Diego Zermeno and Drew Pierson along with sophomore John Nino each recorded a shot on goal as Detroit Mercy fell 6-0 at Marquette on Friday night at Valley Fields.
 
Aug. 27 – Detroit Mercy 1 at San Francisco 2:
Junior and team captain Alex Diac scored his first career goal off a penalty kick just before halftime as Detroit Mercy battled but came up short at San Francisco, 2-1, at Negoesco Stadium. Sophomore goalkeeper Quinn Tews faced 14 total shots making three saves.
 
The Dons got off to a quick start taking a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the match and moved ahead 2-0 in the 12th minute. In the 40th minute, sophomore Tim Allos made a run getting behind the last defender that forced San Francisco goalkeeper Eric Waltz to come off his line. Waltz came in hard with his challenge and took out Allos resulting in a penalty kick. Diac calmly stepped up and buried the penalty kick into the back of the net beating Waltz to the lower right side to pull the Titans within a goal at 2-1.
 
Aug. 24 – Detroit Mercy 1 at St. Mary's 5:
Jannoun posted his first goal of the season off the first career assist from freshman Drew Pierson as Detroit Mercy fell 5-1 in season-opening action at St. Mary's on Thursday night at Saint Mary's Stadium.
 
In the first half, Detroit Mercy had quality scoring chances posting seven shots with three on goal but could not get on the board.
Conversely, St, Mary's capitalized on their scoring chances posting goals in the 27th, 36th, and 38th minute to take a 3-0 lead.
 
After falling behind 5-0 in the second half, Jannoun was able to slip past the last defender down the right side in the 75th minute. He then took the feed from Pierson and fired a shot to the low left side putting the Titans on the board.
