Titans Pull Away From IUPUI As Davis Sets Two More School Records

DETROIT (2/19/2023) -- Graduate senior Antoine Davis scored a game-high 31 points and broke two school records in the process as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team won for the fifth time in the last six games, 81-68, over IUPUI at home on Sunday.

Davis - the nation's leading scorer - broke the single school season record for 3-pointers and points in a season, both held by Rashad Phillips in 2000-01 (136, 785), as he now has 140 triples on the year and 809 points. He upped his career point total to 3,543, 124 shy of Pete Maravich's NCAA record 3,667, and extended his 3-point mark to 569.

Davis was 7-of-22 from the field with four 3-pointers, and connected on a season-best 13-of-14 at the free-throw line to go with a career-high six steals, five assists and three rebounds. Graduate senior A.J. Oliver and senior Gerald Liddell each had 12 points and eight rebounds. Graduate senior TJ Moss posted 11 points and tied his career-high with four steals and graduate senior Damezi Anderson had 13 points, three rebounds and a career-best three blocks.

It was a festive day as the Titans honored their 13-member Hall Of Fame Class in Tim Blackwell (MSC), Aaron Byrd (MSC), Paul Caraballo (T&F), Ruthie Thill (T&F/XC), Allison Hodgins (WSC), Jordan Houtby (MLAX), Monica Kaltreider (WSC), Lindsey Lammers (WG), Autumn Rademacher (WBB), Ryan Raymond (Base), Lawrence Scheffer (Base), Katy Snyder (WFEN) at halftime.

The game was tied at 46-46 with 12:39 left when the Titans (13-16, 9-9 HL) went on a 21-3 run to blow the game open. Davis started that with a three, and after an IUPUI (4-25, 1-17 HL) basket, Detroit Mercy scored nine in a row with a Davis three, two free throws from Liddell and back-to-back baskets from Moss, the latter off a steal, and the team was ahead 58-48 with 9:09 left.

After the Jaguars split a pair at the line, the Titans went on another 9-0 spurt with a jumper from Davis, a triple by Moss and then a layup and two free throws from Davis to push the advantage to 18, 67-49, with 7:13 on the clock.

From there, the Titans controlled the action the rest of the way as they continued to put themselves in position for a home game and a possible bye in the first round of the Horizon League Championships.

Graduate senior Arashma Parks had two points, four rebounds and a career-high two blocks, while freshman Isaiah Jones had three boards.

Detroit Mercy shot 41.7% from the field with 10, 3-pointers, and was 21-of-24 (87.5%) at the free-throw line. The Titans also came away with a season-high 13 steals and seven blocks.

The Titans got off to a fast 7-2 start as Anderson hit a three and after two free throws from Liddell, Anderson went inside for a layup. Detroit Mercy then led 10-4 as Davis buried a three that broke the school mark for most in a season with 137 and 12-6 margin after two free throws from Davis nearly five minutes in.

IUPUI came back to take an 18-17 lead, but a layup from Moss gave the Titans the lead back midway through the period. Anderson's triple had the team up 22-20, and then Davis knocked in a three - which broke the school single-season points record - for a 25-20 score with 6:01 left.

The lead went back and forth a couple of more times and the game was tied at 33-33 as Anderson hit a three at the buzzer.

Davis started the second half with a trey and the advantaged went to seven, 44-37, after Moss hit two free throws and Davis added a jumper at the 15:24 mark.

The Titans led by seven again at 46-39, but the Jaguars knotted it up at 46-46 before the red, white and blue went on the game-ended run.
